Attorneys, Question about firearms & schools

I know there is Fed Law you can't have a firearm on school grounds now but is there a distance from school property restricted?

The reason I'm asking is I would like to train my little coon dog pup close to home & is now close to school property. From my figuring 18 yrs ago I got permission from a man in a real estate group owner to hunt a pup, that I had then, on this property. Old Buster started losing his sight & died a few years ago & I haven't gone there till last winter. A couple of years ago the county built a school next to this property.

My kids gave me a pretty Walker puppy for Christmas. While I out of work, from a hernia operation, I took her down there in the daytime, getting her used to going in the woods. Last spring started taking her at night. The other night, Penny got over on some posted land. I figured I better find out who the owner is because in SC, you are not supposed to go on posted land to get a treeing dog without the owner's permission. I got on the county web site to find the land owner & discovered the land that Penny & I had been using, has been sold.

I haven't been carrying my 22 since it's close to school property. Even though the property I've been taking her to isn't posted, I still want the owner's permission. Penny sometimes doesn't chase deer & rabbis, but trees. The leaves will be gone in a few weeks. I need to shoot one down for her.

If I can't have a firearm there, I'll have to ask to just run the dog instead of hunt.

Do any of you know the law on firearms & schools?

Not a lawyer, but I play one on tv. The fed. no guns around schools law was tossed out by the Supreme Court, IIRC. The gov't. argument was that it was a Commerce Clause issue and that didn't wash with the court. So you're probably subject to your state law on the matter.

It's a local law thing. In Texas, even if you have your CHL, you still can't take guns to schools. Because of the castle law, you can take the gun in your car, but not into the school buildings or something to that effect.

Your best bet is to check local. There's probably a forum similar to this for CHL stuff in your state, it may have an answer.

Another option is good old google. I bet with about 5-15 minutes worth of typing and clicking at google.com, you'd have your answer.

i also play a lawyer on TV.

in arizona if YOU HAVE A VALID AZCCW license you MAY go on school grounds with a weapon in your vehicle. YOU MAY NOT LEAVE the vehicle with a weapon. YOU MUST remove ALL AMMO and secure weapon in a LOCKABLE SPACE upon leaving vehicle.

if YOU DO NOT have an AZCCW LICENSE and since we now have the new concealed law which states anyone can carry concealed as long as not adjudicated a nut job, or a drug abuser/alcohol abuser, spouse beater, and IS NOT A FELON.................

YOU CANNOT ENTER A SCHOOL ZONE W/A WEAPON!

YOU WOULD BE IN VIOLATION OF FED and STATE SCHOOL GUN LAWS and they WOULD WHACK YER PEE-PEE VERY VERY HARD!

If we're talking college...then in Texas, I do believe you can take your gun on campus - but you cannot take it into an ACADEMIC building. That is what I have heard before.

I must apologize for what I suspect is reading this out of context and without understanding, but now I have this image of a well behaved but slightly odd dog who is nice around Jewish clergy but doesn't get much exercise because the trees don't run far.

(I do realize that "trees" in this context refers to holding her quarry up a tree. I was just being a smart azz.)

Hope you get the advice you need and thanks for the chuckle.

Les
