Lightbulb Educate me on inexpensive trucks! (Thinking 4x4 I4 Japanese)

Looking for an early 90s pickup truck.

Want to keep total cost under 5k. Maybe 3k purchase, 2k for maintenance (would like to hold some of it, but we'll see), or something fairly maintained for 4k.

ABS, airbag(s) would be a plus. Manual is a must for something in this price range.

I have NOTHING to tow, it may be used to move a bed or a couch. It's really a backup for my daily driver.

So, 90-99 is probably the year range I'm looking at.

Thinking Japanese trucks for reliability/easy to work on/inexpensive parts. 4x4 would be ideal to have something that would be okay in winter (with winter tires too).

Thoughts? Thanks PParts.

Toyota, end of story. The 22RE is a bulletproof motor, they are fantastic trucks. The only issue could be finding one in your price range without rust, they hold their value VERY well.

F150, newest you can find in your price range.

Edit: Toyota would be great! But I don't think you'll find one for 3k.

I'm seeing a number of Tacoma's on craigslist within the range.

Any particular years to go after? I was thinking Toyota pickup from that vintage would be best (I see some Mazdas too but not a big Mazda fan [with 0 justification, education would change this]

[Example, 99 Tacoma 1 owner 4x4 manual for 4k with 115k miles http://reading.craigslist.org/cto/2029433939.html ]
[Example 95 Tacoma new clutch, starter, i4 4x4 for 2k [unlisted miles] http://newjersey.craigslist.org/cto/2001484552.html ]

Beware of too cheap. 4WD and standard, is getting into some bucks if they need repair. I would suspect that most truck in the range have been used extensively. Set you expectations realistically that you may be buying rust, leaky gaskets, worn bearings, ragged interior....

I would think if I spent the whole 5k at once I should be able to get something fairly decent. Do I really need 4wd? If it snows, won't the weight of the snow in the back help with traction (+ snow tires)?

Looking for something with a bed... so more truck than SUV. Can't move a couch in a Cherokee, but thank you for posting!

+1 for a Toyota with a 22-RE motor. I've been pretty awful to my 1991 for some time, and it just won't quit. Check for rusty bed-tailgate, if you care.

Looks like Toyota Pickup = Hilux until 1995, then 1995 to present = Tacoma. That 22R-E is in the Hilux...

Watch out on the Tacomas -- there was a recall on them -- apparently water could get into the frame, and rust it from within, which would evenually lead to a "SNAP!"

Ford Ranger if you desire s smaller truck. F150 for bigger.

Drive a Ranger then a Toyota, absolutely no comparison. The Toyota is better hands down.

Z-man is right, but only for models 1995.5- 2000. 2001-2004 had a similar problem but there is a recall where Toyota will actually replace the frame of the truck for free.

I've had several Toyota pickups. My '88 DX 4X4 was just great. It carried me and my stuff to Alaska, served me well while there, and I sold it five years later for what I paid. THen bought a '97 Tacoma. Same deal, basic truck (4X4 4 cyl, 5 spd), but with AC. WHat a great machine. Sold it for the first 911. Now I have neither.

Worry free wheels that are amazingly capable.
