2002 Ford F150 - 56K miles
Well, it's really a Lincoln Blackwood, but underneath it's a Ford F150. Any known issues for the F150 in 2002?

I have 186K on my 81 F150 with a 5.4. No issues to date but an alternator a few thousand miles ago.

A tip for ya...pickemup trucks aren't supposed to autocross.

Biggest issues are the spark plug removals.

Ya paul... I know nothing about pickemup trucks... never been around them.
I tend to compare things to the 3/4 ton diesels I am used to. We have 2 dodges and I much prefer the diesel... I didn't say they were bad trucks. I just said I wasn't impressed. I'm not that impressed with any of the American trucks tho. I just like the CUMMINS motor in the Dodge. The rest of the truck is as bland and numb as the others.... |

We put many hundreds of thousands of miles on the F150's and F250s. There's the known spark-plug-coming-loose problem and the occasional bad spark coil, but otherwise very rugged vehicles.
However, the 04 and later are much much much better riding trucks.

Only issue I know with the early '00 Fords is the front wheel bearings in the 4x4s

Under heavy use none of the current crop of merikun trucks hold up very well. I tend to think the fords and chevys suck too. Like I said.. the dodge has the best motor. Thats why we have them...
If I was looking at 1/2t gas burners tho. The Vortec V8 is pretty much unstoppable. |

I need a pick'em up and I would prefer to get an F250 Diesel. However, I can't cost justify the $10K+ difference at the moment. There are lots of crew cab diesels for around $24-$28K with 60-90K miles. For the Super Duty, that should be just about "broken in". But if I can snag this for $13-14K, well it will certainly make up for it.

At 13-14 I'd think you would have lots of options. There isn't any reason you want the whored up blackwood is there? Are they like the Escalade EXT which is basically a dressed up avalanche with softer ride. Will the Blackwood hold up to work?
Prices are back up now.. When diesel was high in late '08 you could buy trucks for a song... Hemi megacabs got down around 12-14. Dad snagged an '06 mega 2500HD with ~40k on the clock for $18k. Shame its all gone up again. |

Sidney - we run the F250's under heavy load and on job sites 6 days a week. We have quite a few with over 300K miles. In the last 6 years we've had about 40 of them and they are extremely reliable and rugged. We still have a few 97's in our fleet.
And then, when we finally get around to retiring one, we can still get around $2500 for them. I think they are amazing!

American trucks went downhill after the '90's. Manufacturers are more concerned about them performing and riding like cars, than like trucks.

I wasn't talking about the motors holding up to that. With proper service they are fine... But the trucks get all worn out feeling quickly. I see lots of trucks that get beat around out here that the bedsides get serious cracks. No brand is safe from that.

I won't say that they are maintenance free, but the old twin I-Beams were very tough.

Doesn't the Lincoln's have the DOHC 5.4 vs the SOHC motors in the F150 lineup? I don't know much about the DOHC motors, but I do know the heads are very different than the SOHC modular motor that's ubiquitous with the '97-'10 trucks. For the record I've got a 4.6L in my 1997 without any issues other than rust.
