What ever you have for hardwood that is plentiful. In the Northeast, it was Maple. Make sure you season (dry) the wood before use. Unseasoned wood = chimney buildup.

I like beech, very dense and yield a lot of BTU's, also burns very clean with minimal ash.

Here is a list of common firewood and their burning attributes. Being that the list is a bit long I have divided it into three parts. A through D, E through R, and S through Y

Alder: Hardwood, medium heat output, medium ease to ignite, produces little smoke, few pops and sparks – is a good burning wood.

Apple: Hardwood, high heat output, not easy to ignite, produces very little smoke, sparks when poked, excellent stuff – smells great. If seasoned a long time will burn with rainbow colored flame.

Ash: Hardwood, very high heat output, not easy to ignite, produces very little smoke, sparks when poked, has a very low moisture content, will burn when green – excellent.

Aspen: Hardwood, low heat output, very easy to ignite, a little smoky, sparks and pops a little, fair wood for burning but good wood for kindling.

Basswood: Hardwood, low heat output, easy to ignite, produces a little smoke, not much sparking or popping, fair wood for burning – good for kindling.

Beech: Hardwood, high heat output, not easy to ignite, not much smoke, sparks when poked, excellent firewood.

Birch: Hardwood, very high heat output, fairly easy to ignite, not much smoke, sparks when poked, excellent wood, burns well but fast and is very dense, slow to season, can rot quickly if bark left on. – Use dried bark for fire starting.

Cherry: Hardwood, medium high heat output, somewhat easy to ignite, very little smoke, few sparks, very aromatic when burned – throw a log of cherry on the fire for those more romantic evenings.

Cottonwood: Hardwood, low heat output, easy to ignite, smokes a little, few sparks, good stuff for kindling.

Cypress: Softwood, very low heat output, very easy to ignite, smoky, few sparks, not a great wood for burning – too smoky for me.

Dogwood: Hardwood, high heat output, not easy to ignite, smokes little, sparks when poked, excellent burning wood.

Douglas Fir: Softwood, medium heat output, easy to ignite, medium smoky, tends to spark and pop, fair, best for kindling.

Great fan of Alder here.

All wood is a compromise (ease of lighting, smoke, heat output, sparks, how long it lasts, etc)—but Alder seems to be the best compromise of the woods available here. (I burn wood in an open fireplace—not a stove.)

I try to get Alder up at the cabin whenever I can. Just put in a very dry cord a few weeks ago that will last all winter.

You really don't have much of a choice which hardwood you are going to get..

What are the native woods in your area?

These will be the woods you can get...

While hardwoods are the most desirable, I burn pine, usually it is free, and I mix it with the other woods in my firebox.

In Vermont... you get a lot of Maple (who would believe that) some Ash, Birch..Still cant figure out why Birch is a classified as a hard wood..

Down on LI where other crib is... Oak and Cherry..and Sycamore... UGH nasty wood.. Pine in both locales,,Spruce also..

Almond is very good, like oak with less ash. Lot of almond orchards around here. It is what you can get. Pine will gum up your chimney.

Of course if you burn Pine exclusively...

mix it with other wood when you have a fire...

In any event you should be eyevballing your chimney yearly anyway.... and seeing what sort of deposits you are developing.. Burning junk wood does provide heat, and junk wood is usually free

I use any hard wood. In fact the more solid/heavy it is the better. Sometimes this sort of stuff doesn't put out that much heat but burns for three times as long. I chopped up some old power poles which gave the poor chainsaw death but one bit burnt for 23 hours. To keep the stuff going and to up the heat output I put some coal on with it.

My girlfriend once said "This firewood is rubbish; we should just burn it" ummm.

Be advised that fresh oak is VERY wet. I used to rotate cords...age 1 for a season while burning an aged load. The fresh stuff will be tough to ignite.

I have 18 acres of SoCal Live California Coastal Oaks. I burn it outside in the firepit only; not in the house.
