I'd buy it.... But I'm young, carefree, and love fast cars.....

sc_rufctr 11-02-2010 11:34 PM

Some Caution.

Further to my earlier post:

If you go ahead... Please don't buy a car that needs work.

In your position you shouldn't compromise trying to save a little money. Aim for the top of the market.
That is desirable color and spec... Full leather interior and maybe even one of the limited or special version.
Preferably with G50 gearbox.

Although if you find a mint 4 speed don't let that put you off.

I've driven both extensively (1983 & 1989) and the most memorable was the four speed.
More fun somehow... Don't ask me how or why but it felt more "alive". :D

Have you looked at any cars?

dewolf 11-03-2010 01:25 AM

My '85 930 was a one owner car with fsh when I purchased it. It was an original Australian delivered car (Euro spec)and one of the last three to arrive in Australia. It was one of the best cars I have ever owned. The old adage of 'those cars are dangerous' is total bullsh$t. I never felt anything more than confident in that car, be it at 60mph around the local roads that allowed it or at 160mph on the roads that.....er....well you get the idea. The handling was incredible. In fact I'd prefer the handling of the 930 to 944T I have. I could have the tail out of fast corners with consummate ease and not even feel as if you needed to lift off the throttle. The a$$ would just squat and rocket you to the next corner.

Go for it. You will not be sorry and contrary to popular belief these cars will and are becoming very valuable in original condition. Do mods to it that you can change back to original with little or no impact. Bigger turbo and I.C with adjustable boost. You will never wipe the smile off your face and you will find yourself walking into your garage just to sit and stare at it.

greglepore 11-03-2010 04:47 AM

By all means do it...but i actually think you'd be happier with an aftermarket boosted 3.2 turbo look-the normal compression makes for a better overall driving experience-ymmv. You have the capability to put a kit on, and the engines are bulletproof so long as you keep the boost reasonable.

GH85Carrera 11-03-2010 04:50 AM

You are asking this group to talk you out of buying a fun toy that most of us love. ???

Go for it!

lukeh 11-03-2010 09:25 AM

For about 7 years I had an 83 SC but always wanted the turbo. For about the past 7 years I've had an 88 turbo. I would do it again in a second. As much as I loved the SC I could never go back now that I have the turbo. Especially after I did the typical bolt on mods (intercooler, turbo, 1 bar and exhaust)? I gained around 100hp and the thing is just a rocket.

Get the turbo.

fastfredracing 11-03-2010 09:25 AM

Somehow, I did not think you guys would be much help in talking me down from this.. I am nearly 100% convinced to go through with it. Have been shopping for the last 5 years, and it really seems as if now is the time to buy.
I have a few cars in mind, looks like I will be doing some traveling. I may need someone in the Jax Florida area to take a quick peek at one for me.
I am actually not looking for a 100% car. I have a price set in mind, and the car has to meet certian criterea . I really dont want a garage queen show piece. I want something that I can drive and road trip. Zero rust is key. A few mechanical/ cosmetic glitches are o.k with me.
I'll keep you posted. Thanks for the advice. One only lives once, might as well enjoy it while you can.
Thanks for the words of encouragement.

svandamme 11-03-2010 11:11 AM

don't do it, that thing is to much car for you man... get something safe, like a Volvo.

The only flaw in your plan is driving it five times a year. They don't like to sit and get better for every mile they cover. Cars are built to be driven.

Exactly! Sitting is bad and evil. It hurts their feelings. If you can only manage 5 times per year, please let me know. I would be glad to care-take it for you and keep it safely but regularly driven.

Red hair, estrogen, you KNOW you can trust me, right? :p

Sounds like your financial situ is OK and I would not talk you down buying a nice 930 driver. Sounds great.

But ... don't you already have a 930 ? And some other projects? I would take a real hard look at what you have time for, and probably dump a bunch of stuff. 10 cars ? 2 930s ? I am not questioning your means but sounds like too much "stuff" around to not be fixing crap all the time. I would simplify, get a drivable 930, and put all the proceeds from cars you sell into a fund, but that is JMHO, since you asked.

Then you would have more space, probably more free time, and you wouldn't dent the finances too much getting a good 930.

strupgolf 11-03-2010 01:24 PM

I've been out of the Pcar world for a few years now but the car I want the most is a 930 Turbo. It's the essence of Porsche. I've got a M3 BMW that is a blast to drive, but the design of the classic 911 is timeless. Everyone know what a Porsche looks like, a 911. I'm going to be in this same mood very soon (hopefully) and I hope I can find one in great shape. Someone once said "own a Turbo, carry a fat checkbook", but you get what you pay for. I wish you luck, and me, well in the next five years look for an old gray haired g-pa with a big smile on his face, maybe for only 10 trips a year.

oilonly 11-03-2010 02:43 PM

Don't buy it! Use the money to remodel your bathroom instead. Or to refurnish your house, new curtains, etc.

Por_sha911 11-03-2010 03:33 PM

Don't do it! Tell me where it is, I'll buy it (I wish).

But please don't cut the corners like that car did: has almost all 4 wheels over the center line at about the 20 second mark. Bad things have happened on the Tail of the Dragon when people do that.

slow&rusty 11-03-2010 04:02 PM

930 ownership is very rewarding. I am into my 6th yr and it has been all good. My car has been very reliable and very cheap to run and never left me stranded (well once) and if you can tinker at home you can keep it running well.

I admit tingly drive mine very seldom, and you owe it to yourself to get out more than 5 times per year in it, I say at least twice per month (weather permitting). These cars have long legs and love to gallop at full trot!

What model years are you looking at? I see in your signature it says "1976 930"...previous car?

Yeah ... I've seen cleaner runs, but in his defense, he was a flat-lander ... they don't have these things we call curves and elevation changes where he comes from ... however you can sleep easy tonight .... curve straightening was indeed discussed at the very next stop for two reasons .... One ... ya just don't do that in the mountains  ... Two .... it takes all the fun out of the drive :D.

rnln 11-03-2010 04:21 PM

yeah, do not buy it. Save your $ in a CD and watch it grows 0.5%, and never have a chance to own a gorgous 930. :D

Paul: I'm glad you said as much up front so I didn't have to be concerned about offending you. I really burns me when people do that. Driving like that gives sports cars a bad name. What kills me is when I see bikers do it! Are they nuts or just have a death wish?

WIL84911 11-03-2010 04:49 PM

It's stated somewhere... about half of the 76 930's were thrashed because of the turbo that came on during fast corners.... am I too late?
