I just talked my best friend into buying a 930 (if he didn't I might have), so you are looking at the wrong guy here too... the only time a fat ass looks good is on the back of a 930..

MikeD930 11-03-2010 07:09 PM

You'll only live once...so go buy a 930 when you still have a chance!

To convince you further go check out Okturbofest over at the 911/930 Turbo board. There's lots of pics of 930s hanging out together which I partaked several weeks ago. Talk about fun!

you have it well thought out. however, some of the most significant decisions are not the ones that are the safest , most rational choices in our lives. epic experiences rarely come without risk. a 930 is obviously under your skin , when you are old do you want to look back and wonder or or look back and smile?

Good luck. I'll wear my Steelers hat tomorrow when I take mine out for a run for good luck. If your lead doesn't pan out, looks like there is one in the Pelican cars for sale board:

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-cars-sale/571537-1979-porsche-930-turbo-black-black-25-000-original-miles.html

Looks killer to me but usual caveats apply - no endorsement, affiliation, knowledge.

My .02 cents ...

Good hunting! That will be half the fun. I've had 3 - '77, '85 and '93. Almost can't even call them the same car. Each had a very distinct proprietary set of dynamics all its own. None better than the others, just different. The older the more of a handful ... but in a good way as long as you are understanding and respectful of the engineering differences at play. Weight, or more appropriate the lack thereof and boost is an intoxicating cocktail. Don't sell short the older cars. I'm not absolutely sure that the '77 wasn't, in fact, the most exhilerating and fun to drive although clearly not the quickest or fastest and certainly not the most forgiving of momentary lapses.

You sound like the prototypical 930/Turbo probie. You have clearly thought it through to a point I suspect nothing put forth in this thread will have any ultimate impact on your actual decision. You are toast, dude. However, that said ...

As many have said, you got to rethink the 5 times a year. If that's all it can be - do NOT buy the car. Take some money, take your son to Hawaii and do the supercar drive thing. That frequency of behind the wheel time will lead you to hate the car and even more damaging is the car will hate you - manifesting it's feelings by being a constantly ill, petulant child. It will do the most dastardly things at the worst times imaginable to beg your attention. They must be driven - the more frequently and closer to limits the better. How do dey know?

Secondly, I wished that in my 30's and 40's possessing the means I should have forgone the pleasures of 930 ownership and gone racing for a few years. My son went that route and I think I really missed something in exchange for those years of 930 ownership ... rewarding and brilliant as they were. Consider it before you get to your mid 60's like me and no longer have the stones or the reflexes to do it right.

If you go ahead with the purchase, get a 930 mentor and make damn sure you get either a really well sorted 95th percentile or higher car or a really solid project car you can take to the level you desire and know it was all done to the highest quality under your watch. Above all do NOT take any one's word for anything. If it ain't on an invoice it didn't happen. Period.

Maintaining this beast by yourself is a major undertaking - not really so difficult, just constant as the ticking of a clock that can easily become the incessant nightmare of a detonation device. Make sure your mentor provides a copious list of the right tools and equipment. Without them a quite easy car to maintain becomes a nightmare that will threaten the "I can always get my money out" theory. Make sure the budget has space for these items in addition to the car purchase.

They are incredible is the stone cold truth. There are elements impossible to discuss or impart to non owners. Somethings just do not translate into the spoken or written word. It becomes very close to terminal ownership which is well beyond pinnacle status.

Go forth my son, and sin like a mofo. Can't wait to hear of your search adventures.

If you're gonna do it NOW is the time to do it You can get a deal because the way things are. I doubt they will ever be cheaper.

You guys did a lousy job talking me out of this. I was really looking for a 3.3 car, but this 76 came on my radar screen close enough to me that I had to take a look. Peru Red, with matching leather, which is a sweet color. We have a guy local with a Peru RSA, and I remember being enamored with the color in person. The pics dont even come close to doing it justice. 70k on the clock, completly unmolested original car with minor mods ( exhaust and turbo).
It was one of those deals, the guy was in the middle of a divorce, and had to sell by the end of the week. I bough it for about 10k under what I was looking to spend. I was so friggin' excited, that I drove it home ( 4 hour jaunt ) on the PA turnpike without any plates.
It has some minor running issues, but this car is super quick. Unfortunately, I drove it a couple of times this week, and then stuffed it in the garage for a long winters nap. I go back to rental house work ( weekends ) for the rest of winter, and wont get to do much tinkering until spring.
I threw in a pic of the Turbo Carrera I already own.

OK, I'm confused. I thought you were buying your first 930. What's the story on the black car?

fastfredracing 11-14-2010 03:12 PM

It is sort of complicated. I own it 50/50 with my business partner in the rental house business. At one time, as a side business, more of a hobby, we bought , sold , built, and dismantled Porsches. We sort of dissolved that business to finance our current one. We sold a bunch of cars, and parts but held onto the 930. I offered to buy him out, but he would rather hold on to it and let its value grow. It runs but has 7 broken head studs, and needs interior, suspension, and a bunch of maintanence work. He was fine with me fixing and using it, but I did not want to complicate a really good business relationship. When we dissolved the Porsche biz, we sold a bunch of cool cars. We had a 72 S targa sportomatic in light green. I wanted to keep that one, but we got a killer offer on it, and let it go.
I really wanted a car to drive. and did not think it would be fair for me to be blasting around at 110 mph in a car that I only own half of.
We decided that when its time comes, we will take the money out of the business , and split the labor between us. Have to keep it all fair.
Both of our lives have been so busy for the last 5 years, we just have not been able to find the time for a proper resto.
