Talk me out of buying a 930.
I have been going back and forth over this for about a year now. I can afford it. I have no real bills. I also have no other real hobbies other than old dillapidated Porsches. I dont golf, I don't watch sports. I don't drink, I don't have a Harley, or a mistress. I live pretty frugal. I have not had a car loan for 15 years. The last one was the purchase of my SC which I still have, and it is still worth what I paid for it. The 930 will theoretically be the same way.
I have my lady's approval, but she says that it is a lot of money for a car that I will realistically drive 5 times a year. My reply was that I am buying this car at the bottom of the market, and that in 5 years , it will still be worth the same , or more than I paid for it. Most people pay the same money for their new caravan, or jeep, and it plummets in value while they are paying it off. I sort of reason that this will be an investment, but I know the reality of owning an old Porsche. I do however maintain my own cars, so even a catastrophic engine failure will not be as taxing to me as it would to a guy who has to pay a shop. Actually , that would be quite enjoyable experience for me. I have the storage space. For some reason, though, I feel a little guilty for buying a toy of this caliber for myself , but you know what.... I work hard, have been for 20 years, and will continue for at least the next 10. I am not getting any younger, and really feel I need to start checking things off my bucket list. A 930 is one of the last ones on that list. I have made good decisions, and been smart with what little funds I have had available all my life. My business is booming, and my side business is also doing very well. Any good reasons why I should not do this ? I have posted about this before, and I dont want to beat a dead horse, but I think I am ready to pull the trigger. Any last minute words of wisdom? Can anyone tell me I am being irresponsible and I should be banking money for my kids college fund?( he is only 5)

It sounds like you're in a good place and it won't make a negative financial impact. So what's the problem? None that I can see. You're right on so many levels. People who buy new cars today accept depreciation as a fact of life but when you think about it... It's nuts. Buy an $80,000 Merc, BMW, 4x4 or whatever now and it's worth less than $40,000 in 3 years time??? Who sold us on that idea? And why did we buy into it????  My cousin is a hard working guy with his own business but he's not very bright. He recently leased an AUDI A5. Nice car but the first thing he said to me is... "You can't tell it's a front wheel drive from behind the wheel!"... Why didn't he just buy a rear wheel drive car? Before the AUDI he had a Mazda RX8. Again leased on his business. IMO The guys got rocks in his head. When it's all said an done these two cars would have cost him well over $100,000! And what's he got to show for it? Oh and it's not like he's rolling in money. He got married about 3 months before buying the AUDI and has just had his first child.

Buy a good one. Don't buy a marginal one and fix it up.

The way I look at it, the 930 is your kids college fund. Properly maintained, I don't see why you couldn't sell it in 13 years and recoup your $.

My only regrets about owning a 930 is that a wasted time and money on other cars before it that weren't 930s.
The only flaw in your plan is driving it five times a year. They don't like to sit and get better for every mile they cover. Cars are built to be driven. |

I'm retired. I've been restoring the 356 for over a year again. 3rd time the charm. So I'm in the driveway looking at all my pathetic work from yesterday looking to see how I need to correct it today. I had an old buddy drop by today I'd given a ride in the 930 over 20 years ago. It is sitting forward in the garage. I'm backing out in the 356 as he pulls behind me. I wave, come on get in, I was going for a ride anyway. He'd been in the 930 but never the 356. I give him the curosy swoopy loop ride. For the Texas Panhandle that is a tall order. The curvey part. He has a death grip on the dashboard. Come on. Anyway we discuss this that and another and I say "dude you need to take a ride in the 930" he was like yea sure. As I flash back on to the ride I gave him it was probably late 80's. I took him on a long sweeper that he swears I was going 150. It is a true 60mph but in a 930 probably 90-100. A road you've covered 100 times. You know it they don't. My point? These cars are epic.
I asked so, the old 930 has about 200hp more than your last ride are you truly ready? He hemmed hawed and said I'll catch you next time. To the average guy. Well you know, "they" may not get it but they just might.

I was thinking about it for a long time and really wanted an S2000. This was back in 2001 and the S2000 was the hottest thing around (for me anyway). I was 33, with no kids and a young wife. Business was going great and the seller asked, "What are you waiting for, old and slow like me to drive a fast car? Kid, take this from me even if you don't buy the car. Drive a fast car when you are young, don't wait like me." A few years, I bought an S2000 also.
Buy the 930. I was in your shoe. Enjoy the heck out of it. I drive it a few times a years now because of my little kids. |
