Flywheels Becoming the Next Hot Technology in Hybrids
Flywheels: Reinventing the wheel | The Economist
It looks like flywheels are in development to create temporary energy storage for hybrids. I guess they will use a large mass that they can uncouple from the drivetrain and spin it up under braking and then re-clutch it in when acceleration is desired. Jackson |

As a teen I read popular science magazine...
They predicted giant maglev flywheels to store electricity... They also predicted street cars would be adding turbochargers... This was about 40 years ago.

quickly.
![]() seriously, I know what you're getting at - they are mounted to spin on a horizontal plane.

A couple of pict's I took of that GT3 R hybrid KERS system at the Paris show 2010....
it sits where the passenger seat would be. ![]() looking from the drivers side (can just see the lower bolster) ![]()

Well, that's ONE way to change suspension characteristics...speed bumps must be a hoot!

So does the horizontal flywheel make anti-roll bars unneccessary? Cooool.

. . .unless your going over that speed bump. --Then you need left/right anti-roll bars.
![]() Actually Porsche does have some pretty good active-suspension tech. ...but there is also the option of isolating the flywheel alignment from that of the car. ..that's what I would do.

They can probably eliminate most, if not all gyroscopic effects with counter-rotating flywheels. I have not sat and thought it all out, but you could probably make most of it "go away".
Island - nice pics, btw. |

Good thinking. counter-rotating flywheels may be more space efficient. For load isolation, Keeping the speeds the same would be an issue, and you would need at least 2x the electrical. ...which would double the chance of failure w/in the system. ...thinking more about it, I'm back to liking the mechanical sol'n ..gimbals.
Oh, and fwiw on the Porsche system; I didn't see any top/bottom symmetry, so I expect that theirs is a single wheel.

here we go...
![]() edit, and here is what looks like a contra-rotate KERS .. http://www.green.autoblog.com/2009/04/24/sae-2009-torotrak-mechanical-flywheel-kers-likely-coming-to-ne/

Patriot from years ago had this as well, though it didn't go into production.

Closings
Rosen Motors Folds After Engine's '50%' Success Autos: Brothers' company failed to win the support of major car manufacturers, who chose to bet on other fuel technologies. November 19, 1997|KAREN KAPLAN | LA TIMES STAFF WRITER After spending nearly 5 years and $24 million to develop an engine technology that it promised would revolutionize the auto industry, Rosen Motors will close its doors on Friday because it couldn't persuade any major car manufacturers to buy into its vision. Launched in 1993 by Harold Rosen, a renowned aerospace engineer, and his brother Ben, a legendary venture capitalist and chairman of Compaq Computer Corp., Rosen Motors aimed to develop a turbine-flywheel powertrain for passenger cars.

^^^ that's what cheap fuel brings.
Now that mfg and control system costs are going down (and fuel costs going up) I think that we can expect more and more 'efficiency' systems to be employed. Either that or we will all be progressive and ride bicycles, like in China.
