Achilles - OUCH!

Early in October I was running at a full clip and went down like a sack of potatoes when a sudden pain shot through my leg, making my foot numb. Blew out - at least to some degree - my achilles tendon. Spent the next few days in bed, and a week not driving the car because a clutch hurt too much to use. Messed up my wrist in the fall too...

Slowly, it got better... I could eventually walk without the excruciating pain, but still limped pretty badly.

Last week, my foot slipped off the edge of a step and I felt it pop again. For the next day or two it hurt pretty bad (I'd say on the order of day 3 of the original injury)

Last night, slipped in the snow coming up the driveway. BAM! I felt another pop. The uneven, lumpy snow isn't helping because it hurts to bend my foot upwards.
Hurts like mad now, but I can still walk....with a bad limp, if I turn my foot sideways so the tendon is not extended.

I've tried to take it very easy on this foot, but it doesn't seem to be helping much... I keep hurting it again.

Any advice for Achilles injuries? No Med insurance, and biz is slow so I can't do a Doc right now... who would probably want an MRI or something....

I suffered an achillies injury (not severed thank goodness) several years ago. They take forever to heal...as you discovered, when weakened, it's too easy to hurt again.

See a doctor.
Seriously, It is not advisable to give/take medical advice on the web, but the treatment is either surgical, or a plantar flexion cast for *months*.
That or a limp for life.

Where's Tobra?

Sorry to hear of your pain. Been there, it will continue to be a problem. You can rest it, let it heal after each episode, but it will never regain original strength. And it will continue to 'pop'.
Your only answer is surgery, I know that is not what you want to hear at this time. Rehab after the surgery is important to regain range of motion and strength.
In my case I can still feel it, no pain just a bit of tightness remains.

What George said.

You can get them to heal pretty well without surgery a lot of the time, gut you have to be in a cast and using crutches.

I will defer to the Doc. I just had mine to deal with, he has seen a lot more.

But I think you need to keep from re-injuring it and give it a chance to heal.

I say delete this thread.

Complain to your landlord about some hazardous condition that you need remedied at the rental.

Then "fall" before he gets there.

So much for personal responsibility.

Best,

Repair is surgery....BTDT. My tendon was stretched, sutured then melted with an cauterizing iron. They shaved my buttcheek to ground me. 20 years and it's still together.

The alternative was a cast with my toes pointed straight out for 3-4 months......hoping it would grow back togther.

Rodney Peete blew out both, still played in the NFL.

Lol. Nah, he already knows.. we were talking about it when he told me he wanted us to move by Dec17th... I told him that especially with it hurting like it does, no WAY would I be able to pack, lift, and move everything.
He blew his out too a few years ago...
