Kids got straight A's ;-)
This past quarter, both my kids got straight A's with 9 A plusses between them.
My son has gotten straight A's his entire life but this is the first time my daughter has gotten them since she was in 2nd grade ![]() ![]() ![]() She's heading off to college next year and she's preparing herself now. |

Congratulations! Your kids sound great, sammy. Surprising considering the parentage. Must be the wife. j/k

I did all that when they were young and set the bar high and taught good habits, now it's all up to them. I figure if you wait until they're teenagers to start parenting it's too late. |

I agree. Have to start young.
My daughter (HS freshman) is like that. She tracks her grades online, is trying for straight A's, currently "A" in everything except her "B" in Chinese. She's also trying to keep up her record of perfect scores in every math test this year. My son (5th grade), well, we're still working on spelling, conjugation/grammar, and penmanship. He's brilliant in what he's interested in, indifferent on the rest. He came to me last week for a explanation of why moving wires through magnetic fields produce electric currents. A lot of his energy goes into Lego creations, learning about the solar system and science tidbits, and physical stuff (fencing, dance, Ripstick). Seen these things? How to Ride A RipStik Caster Board - It's like surfing a wave or snowboarding on the street! He can ride his in his sleep. The kid has fast feet and great balance.

I did at one time when my daughter got student of the month but that was at a different school. I sold the truck long ago so the sticker went away.
I think it is important to recognize achievements like that, encouraging good behavior. Teaching a kid what "good" looks like. Can you imagine the message I would have sent if my daughter got an award like that and gave me a bumper sticker acknowledging that fact and I ignored it? That'd be almost as bad of a parenting job as those asswipes that brag that their underachiever future prison inmate kid can beat up an honor student. Talk about negative reinforcement. The best they could hope for is a low-paying job with their name on their shirt working for an honor student. The schools my kids are attending now do not do the bumper sticker thing, the student's performance is recognized in other ways. EDIT: clarification ....... this was posted before I read mikey's post, I know him and have met his kids and yes I know he was joking. It was not directed at him. DIfferent schools of thought on that.
First I think it is an awesome acheivement and you should be proud. But on the other hand... My sister was honor society and mostly A's throughout high school. Never did well in college. I dropped out of high school in 10th grade. Solid C student before then. Ended up getting GED and going to night school and now have a masters in engineering. Moral of the story? Dont waste too much energy when it doesnt matter and burn out early. If you are going to peak, make sure it is in college. Hopefully your kids can stay focused the entire time. Plus if my sister got a B my Mom was disappointed. If I got a B my Mom was soooo proud. ![]()

I finished in the 4th quarter of my high school class. Barely met the qualifications for college. Went to college. Graduated around a 3.0.
Now I have a great job, run my own company on the side, and own 2 Porsches ![]() High school is overrated. Make sure the kids are enjoying life. They'll only be a kid once.

my son is 12 and is already making plans to go to Caltech. His decision, not mine. The idea of going to a regular Cal state or UC school really bothers him. He's tested in the top 1% of all students his age in the nation 5 years in a row on the Iowa standardized skills and aptitude test. His composite score has been 99 (which is the highest score possible) every year. He's the type of kid who dreams of answering the questions the current physicists can't answer. He seriously plans to get a Nobel prize. Can't get to where he wants to be with B's and C's. Caltech ain't easy to get into. This year their freshman class is 147 men and 106 women with middle 50% SAT scores (verbal/math) of 2170-2300. I read somewhere that One out of every thousand Caltech alumni has received the Nobel Prize. Makes sense, it's a really specialized small school. Last edited by sammyg2; 11-23-2010 at 09:54 AM.. |

My 8th grade daughter has tested at genius level on IQ tests, and she is brilliant with a piano (playing and composing). She also writes books. And she gets horrible grades in school. I figure she'll be a rich and famous composer or author someday.

Congrats on the great grades!
We just got progress reports today. Straight A's by our daughter, who's a junior taking all AP and honors classes. She's number 30 out of 800+ kids in her class. Our freshman son just got his and it's a mix of A's and B's, but he swims 20 plus hours a week for practice. State champ for the 400, 800 and 1500 free in the long course last year. We're proud of both of them. |

As someone who got their phd at Caltech, I can say in all honesty that I wouldn't encourage my son to go there for his undergrad. For grad school - yes (though the vibe has changed over the past decade, and not for the better). fwiw, ymmv. Last edited by nostatic; 11-23-2010 at 08:56 PM.. |
