Escondido Bomb House

If you haven't read about it, here is a link. A wackjob was making bombs in his house in Escondido. The City/County/State wants to burn the house to the ground. Guess what? I'm the consulting Certified Industrial Hygienist (Safety guy) on this party. Side job with an old consulting firm I used to work with part time. Here is the link. KUSI News Weather Sports San Diego - Escondido 'Bomb House' burn down scheduled for Thursday

Yeah, that is the plan. My concern is the acids Hydrochloric, Nitric and Sulfuric. Problem for the after burn clean up guys. Burning liquid acids evaporates the water therefore concentrationing the acids. They're going to test the residue and neutralize as necessary. Evacuation of those downwind is pretty important.

Why can't a hazmat crew just empty the house of all the bomb-making stuff?

Why are they burning it? Most expedient way to get rid of all the toxic crap in the place I guess. Be a bummer to be living down wind when they light it off.

Short answer...they're scared the F of it...gardner was injured just walking on the property. Schit is piled everywhere and they can't get a straight answer outta the guy what he was going to do w/ it. He said he was going to tunnel under hiway 15 and blow it up...don't think so. PLUS been pinned to a couple bank robberies. Scary Cat.

They're taking what they can out of the house. I can't comment more than that. At this time.

I'm consulting on this from Vancouver, BC so won't be there for the bon fire. Have competent crew there however.

I just heard that the burn has been rescheduled for thurs. @ 9:00 AM; weather more favorable then. The neighborhood has been zoned into red and yellow areas.

Those in the red have to evacuate, those in the yellow are told to stay inside with windows closed. I 15's going to be shut down and traffic rerouted - that'll be a royal pain. Supposedly, the evacuees will be able to return to their homes late afternoon.

I know a guy who plays senior citizen volunteer sheriff in the San Marcos area adjacent to the unincorporated area of Escondido where the house is. He and 40 or so more sheriff's volunteers are being placed to help with traffic control. He'll be there from 4:00 to 11:00 AM. We'll probably see more on TV than he will.

He said the authorities went into the house and bomber boy was apparently a hoarder. Could barely navigate through the place and decided it was too dangerous to remove much from the house, so didn't, decided to torch it instead. Then again, Hugh may have better info, dunno.

They got onto this guy after his gardner stepped on something in the back yard and it blew up, putting him in the hospital.

I'm wondering if anyone's been documenting this on video tape, interviewing neighbors, etc. Seems it'd make for a very watchable documentary.

They busted another bomb maker in Escondido also. The guy was making pipe bombs.

An old gf of mine lives in San Marcos, not far away and says it's a pretty decent neighborhood...except for the occassional bomb maker I guess.

Interesting - I might have to scope out a good spot at 9:00 am. Winds are generally calm during the morning hours here but shutting the I-15 will be a royal PITA. Glad I don't commute to work anymore.

I think this is about as stupid as it gets. Tree huggers bang their heads to get microns out of the air and these cats will put 10 years worth of crap up in the air in less than an hour.

Just my uninformed opinion.

But hold on there Sylvester, the guy was making bombs, right? So, the wisdom is to light this on fire? As an armchair quarterback, I'm calling for a new play. Less "explosive."

Reports say that this is the largest cache of illegal explosives ever discovered in the hands of a private individual. If that is true, based on what they found prior to deciding that it was too dangerous to continue searching, burning the house down seems logical to me.

Apparently there are multiple federal agencies involved including the FBI and, I've heard, Homeland Security. I'm thinking that their actions will be a prototype upon which they will base there actions in any similar future events that might occur. Seems reasonable; why waste a good training opportunity?

They've already removed a number of trees, fences and vegetation that might catch on fire. Tree huggers are probably discouraged and won't be a problem. A number of them were hugging some of the trees they cut down, refused to let go until the last minute and damn near got mulched by the FBI chipper they threw the trees in.

The unabomber was leftist/anarchist. Certainly not TEA party type person, since he is not in favor of the US Constitution.
