The road between Pahrump and Las Vegas (160) is a LONG straight road between Las Vegas and Pahrump (and mostly the only way in or out), from Las Vegas you go up to Mountain Springs (fun, but short twisty road) and the DOWN to Pahrump. In a weekday you may have one or two patrol cars, on the weekends is 'police central'

As Tabs mention there is no much in Pahrump but being in Nye County the solicitation of prostitution is legal and bordellos abound plus they have a very decent track.

DO NOT speed on 160, you will be caught and will not get a break, not even the locals.

From what I've been reading, it seems just about any speeding ticket in NV can be knocked down to a parking ticket with no points. Perhaps my 20 over means I'll have to do online traffic school too. But I'm pretty sure this is gonna be an affordable event. Such a racket.

My god, people, how long are we going to collectively put up with this? My blood just boils every time I even think about what traffic enforcement has come to. The "justice" served up in traffic court is worse than that in your average shythole third world dictatorship. I've started writing my representatives demanding a return to due process and the "reasonable doubt" standard of evidence in all traffic cases.

I don't like it anymore than you do, Jeff. But I'm not rich and powerful enough to do much about it. And I'm not a NV resident or voter. The insane traffic in Vegas has already made this past weekend's trip there my last ever except for when business sends me there. Maybe I'll write a letter when it's all over with. But for now my main concern is minimizing my fine and erasing the points. I'll try hard to never spend another dime in places that rob motorists like this. What more can I do? I seem to only ever get nailed in places too far away for me to go back and fight it in court. And it's not like judges aren't in on the extortion too.

Jeff, while I agree completely with you ... 20 over is beyond reasonable doubt

That road is such a barren desert, that I could lose control of my car and still not hit anything. There should be no speed limit there. That there is just proves it's about money (fines or federal hwy. funds) and not about safety.

Agree, if you lose control of the car and go left the only thing you can hit is California ..... and yes, it is about the money ...

I hear you. But, instead of telling us you will never spend another dime in such places, write and tell that to the public officials and chambers of commerce in those places. That's what I've started doing.

???

I think you may be missing the point entirely concerning "reasonable doubt" and "due process". At 20 over, the cop would still have to prove to a jury of our peers, beyond any reasonable doubt, that the accused was, in fact, going 20 over. Doesn't matter what charges are brought - the cop has to prove them, not to the judge, but to us.

jriera 11-28-2010 07:28 PM

Yup, I missed the point completely.

Rick, did you go over the new bridge over the Hoover Damn?

Rick Lee 11-29-2010 04:27 AM

I went across on the way to Vegas and it was great. They built the side walls so high that you can't see anything from your car so no one slows down to rubberneck. I loved that. On the way back, traffic was backed up almost 15 miles to between the exit for 95 and Boulder City. That totally defeated the purpose of that bypass. So I crossed the median and went back to 95 and took the long way home. I hope to never return. The traffic there is just mind boggling.
