Tell me about dealing with a speeding ticket in NV.
Got nailed yesterday for 90 in a 70 just outside Pahrump. Cop came right out said (I'm paraphrasing) he's a tax collector because it's the holidays, they need money and his sgt. won't let him knock anything off recorded speed. He didn't tell me to slow down or be careful, just sign here and get some online atty. to get it knocked down to illegal parking. Yes, really. I know there's no shortage of $69 ticket-fighting lawyers in the area. My court date is 02/28/11 in Vegas, so I might actually go back there for court. I don't plan to contest it, but would like to try to get some deal to knock it down a few bucks with no points and for an offense that doesn't report to AZ as a moving violation. What's the best option here? Hire one of those guys or show up and ask the prosecutor for a deal. Cop would totally vouch that I was cool during the stop, if that matters there.
BTW, I handed him my NV CCW and was in a rental car with CT plates and my DL is from AZ. He didn't even ask about my gun, but asked my I have a NV CCW. I tried to schmooze him and said I come to NV a lot and spend a lot of money here and that NV stopped recognizing UT permits. He didn't care. Press hard, make three copies. |
local atty. who golfs w/ the judge is your best bet, BUT how much was the ticket?
sounds like the cop isn't liking his job much... |
Don't know how much it is. I have to call some place on Monday to find out. I think it's $200ish plus all the BS surcharges. Tabs said closer to $700-$800. Cop freely admitted our conversation was being recorded and did seem a little PO'ed at how the whole thing works. He was going the opposite direction. I just pulled over and waited when the lights came on. I'm sure he would have cut me a break if he'd had a little more officer discretion.

I received a speeding ticket in NV a few years ago, doesn't show on my CA driving history... AFAIK they are not reporting to other states unless it is a major violation (criminal). For mine the cost of one of those "Speeding ticket in NV? Call us!" places was going to run the same as the ticket charge ($150ish) so I paid the ticket and went on with life.
Apparently the policy is... NV plates get a "safety violation" while out-of-staters get a speeding ticket. Lovely, isn't it? |
well, it's about the same as a cheap atty. will cost on an easy bargain ticket...
|
Pretty sure mine is gonna be north of $200, probably closer to $400. I got one in Valley of Fire years ago, but it was US Park Police, though still in NV. It was going to be $450 for 72 in a 50 zone (still in total barren desert with no traffic), but he knocked it way down and it was "only" $237. Though that check went to somewhere in Georgia, not Nevada. It's such a stupid racket. But I speed a lot and figure every few years I'm gonna get popped. I kind of liked that the cop basically admitted to as much.

Rick, welcome to the tax collection, 160 (the road between Pahrump and Las Vegas) is highly popular for speeding stops ... my recommendation will be to call Ticket Busters, 702-Traffic or similar. Let me know how can I help.
|
Yes, I saw the 702-TRAFFIC commercials on the hotels CCTV yesterday. I need to talk to someone there though. From their and other similar websites, it seems they don't even try to get the fine reduced, just the charge and points. I suspect these lawyers tell you to write them a check for the full fine amount plus their fee, they then get it knocked down to a parking ticket, pay the nominal fine out of your check and keep the difference for themselves. I'm looking to save some money here as well as make the points go away.

Maybe call Formerly Steve Wilkinson

Let me ask my wife who she uses ... she has some 'experience'

on the premise that they just want money, what is the easiest way for them to make a net gain off of you?
if rational, and the premise correct, they will do that I suspect they will bargain it down to avoid a ct. showdown as it costs them $$ to run you thru ct. (even if the ct. is full of marsupials that hop). In my fair city, I got RR'd on a double ticket whamy a few months ago - rather than fight their BS, I just paid them a reduced fine (they told me about it themselves!). I did not do my legal research first, tho and they restricted me from driving after midnight (except for my job as a secret agent, etc.) for a month. I'm sure I'm in all the cop computers now too. So, watch out for that, everyone. You are unlikely to have that problem as it was out of state Rick - but maybe they report to your home state? At any rate, you are most likely not getting out of it... the amt. of justice you get declines rapidly with the level of the court, and traffic is a total bottom feeder environment. I suggest seeing if you can negotiate yourself - free but your own time is wasted. Nest step, is to see how much an atty. will cost you. My bet is that > 2 hrs. of his time will be a net $$ loss to you. Of course, you could always sic P-O-P on them. We need to think of these things as what they really are: user fees in lieu of toll roads or higher taxes... |
Jordie..I tol him the story about running into Pahrump..as U come into town the sign says 65 mph and I noticed all the other traffic was running at 65, then U come to a sign that says 55 Mph and all the other traffic is running at 55, then you come to a sign that says 45 Mph and all the other traffic is running at 45 and then you come to a sign that says 35 Mph and all the other traffic is running at 35...the message I got real quick was you obey the MPH signs or you pay the price.
I used to make that run up and back from Pahrump..set the cruise control at about 79 MPH and U have no problems. Just let the speed demons head on by...and sometimes U see em by the side O the road getting a sumons. |
My question to Rick is Unless the gun is visible in some way WHY THE FK DO U EVEN BRING UP A CCW OR THE FACT THAT YOU HAVE A GUN IN THE CAR? Why cause yourself more problems by complicating the matter? This I just don't get?
Negioate or get it knocked down to Parking..is that a joke? ...if U go to court and plead out..the DA will come back with an offer...they will knock a few buxs off...ifn you go to traffic school or sumthin like that. And Brando...there is NO IN STATE pat you on the back, while saying, "Be good and don't do it again. They tag everybody just bout the same unless you is juiced in and your name is Harry." The car insurance rates in LV are higher than in LA...why..you got so many drunk and high drivers in this town. It just ain't safe out there... I do see those $99 Bill Boards about town saying they can help you out of a jam... I never had cause to use one of those services, so I can't say if they can really knock down a fine? Probably not much more than just showing up yourself, getting on you knees and sobbing, "Please don't throw the book at me, I will su(k your co(k if you let me off." So 20 over the MPH limit should be good for $700 to $800...????? |

I found out N LV Municiple is about the only one that runs a positive cash flow in the state. .. |
I'm sure he told the guy about it, to be absolutely certain to avoid any suspicious surprises.
|
I usually tell a cop I'm CCW'ing so he knows I'm not a bad guy. It has gotten me a warning before when I probably would have gotten a ticket otherwise. I don't think this cop even ran my DL. He stayed outside his car the whole time and used what looked like a credit card payment machine.

Sure are a lot of experts around here on speeding around Pahrump. What's so special about that place? ;)

Pahrump is the azz end of the world, out in the middle of NOWHERE... I went up that way cause there were estate auctions that was auctioning off a guys 5000 gun collection, and 250,000 rounds of ammo. It amounted to 10 gun auctions and 2 ammo auctions. This guy was out for volume and not quality. He had not one Mosin Nangant but 300 Mosin Nangants..he never met a gun that he did not like. However his Dad was an Optometrist in Hollywood back in the day and had a coupla hundred really nice spoons. I got a really rare Springfield Krag Cadet rifle..aka Philippine Constabulary rifle outa that collection. In 30 years I have seen exactly 3 of them, 2 in that auction and one that was probably fake. I got the best of the two and on the cheap for what it is. Nobody knew what the fk it was except for me. |
I am sort of happy I was nailed a few miles outside of Nye Co. I really didn't relish having to go back to Pahrump for any reason. My court date is in Vegas. I'll be calling the ticket-fixing lawyers tomorrow.
