can someone explain the california 10 day handgun wait to me?

i called my FFL guy. i asked him (kinda timidly actually) , "am i all clear?"

he said he found out on the very first day that i was a certified law abiding citizen.

what?!! then what are the other 9 days for?

i get the new hardware on saturday! i also think my brother got me some SWAT approved goodies..my grapevine is very loose lipped..shhh. i dont tell my mom anything.

It is for making the process difficult thus disuading you from starting the process...

They figure if you still want to kill the SOB after 10 days, might as well do it.

serious? this seems like a viable explaination. no "passionate" gun purchases.

"Cooling off" period.

I think the rationale is to let tempers cool - no "Hey Joe" moments - getting mad, going to the gun store, and blowing her away that day. Secondarily to allow time for background checking, perhaps the checks used to take longer.

I'm not convinced the waiting period has much benefit. Then again, I'm also not able to think of any time I actually needed to have a handgun within 10 days or else. So basically I don't care (or didn't when I lived in CA).

I always looked at it as giving you the time to adequately stalk your intended victim, get very clear about his/her habits and better plan the exact right time/place to take them out, how and where to dispose of the body and make your getaway to Mexico.

Great idea!

Yeah, wouldn't want to do anything rash.

+1
They're trying to mitigate the, "Hold my beer! I'm gonna buy me a gun and shoot that b***h" scenario.

Not without sending this thread straight to PARF!

BTW, I could walk into big 5 sporting goods and buy a 12 gauge shotgun and walk out with it 2 minutes later and blow a big hole in sumbudy, so the cool off thing is just a BS excuse for the anti-gun lobby.
They're the guys over there, on the left.

Normally TX is 10-15 minute wait while they check.

My last FFL transfer the guy tells me it got flagged and to call in a few days.

If they don't hear back in 5 then I can come get it.

He said it can happen when you have a common name or it may have been that I was not born state side.

If you have a CHL, there is no check...

Gives you a little time to plan?:D

They already did the check to give CHL.

This totally makes sense, because nobody ever used anything but a handgun to commit murder

The the Islamic terrorist in Santa Barbara that drove around in an SUV running people down...

They wana keep the school kids in Stockton safe.

Tobra 12-08-2010 11:56 AM

Oh Tabdullah, the desert sun of Vegas has addled your mind. That guy in Stockton bought all his stuff in Oregon.

That 10 day waiting period has eliminated any criminals purchasing guns too.

Ahhh the people at the McDonalds in San Diego?

Tobra 12-08-2010 12:13 PM

I thought you were talking about the guy who shot up the school in Stockton, because you said school kids in Stockton, my mistake.

The guy who killed 2 dozen in the SD McD's massacre was a welder who was despondent because he was turned down for a job. Friend of mine was the guy who turned him down.

Jim Bremner 12-08-2010 01:15 PM

I'm OK with the 10 day wait.....On your first gun. Now on your second gun it's just goofy.
