I'm sorry, I've got to disagree on 2 points. First the best Camaro was '70-'73. Second IROCs were Camaros from '85 through '90.

Hey, without cheating who can list all 10 factory displacements of the original SBC?

RANDY P 12-09-2010 12:39 PM

262, 265, 267, 283, 302, 305, 307, 327, 350, 400

Small journal cranks up until 350, and real big journal 400 and is externally balanced and short connecting rods.

This is not trivia. It's common knowlege to any car guy.

1970 IMO. They all went down hill after that.

IMO it was the best looking, it was the only year with a 12 bolt rear end, compression, horsepower and torque went successively down in 71, 72 and 73 and the improvements were minor. You could still get a 396 or even an LS6 454 with some 500 ft lbs of torque (although I'd take the Z28 350 thank you).

After 74? Yuck. Quality went downhill along with everything else.

Especially growing up in Renton, WA.

In that town, even a 9 year old paperboy knows that. :)

Oh Haha 12-09-2010 03:39 PM

I had a unique 78 with the 3/4 vinyl top, no spoilers. I added the short DUCKtail from the 70 model.

My favorite has to be the 70 1/2 Z/28.

Another vote for 1969, I'm a wide body fan...

The engine still lives today, but in a chopped 34 Ford sedan my buddy owns. He bought the engine after the fire from the insurance company. I bought it off the showroom floor in 1969. The window sticker was $3,600.00. Not a typo $3,600.00.

My neighbor has a silver/black/black M-22 '69 Z-28 w/ 42K miles and they are "rebuilding" a genuine JL-8 car as well.

onewhippedpuppy 12-09-2010 06:45 PM

'69 Z28, no question.

RANDY P 12-09-2010 07:12 PM

70-73 RS, don't matter what's under the hood when I get it. It'll be screwed with after I'm done.

These cars are made to be chopped up.

For Camaros I've owned a 67 (nasty 408 SB, T350, 12 bolt 4:10) , 69 (built 350 4sp), and 77 Camaro (first car, rusty pos)

All I seem to buy are Chevys and BMW and lately Mercedes.

1st gen, no contest.

Had a '69 convertible as my first car! My second was a '69 coupe, both supercharged. Convertible was a B&M 144ci roots while the coupe had an 'S' trim Vortech with a blow-through carb.

Miss both dearly....

The only car I desire is a '69 over my 911. I want one with a great suspension and of course an LS-X motor w/6-spd.

I thought the factory made some large journal cranks in other displacements (327 and 302), did some research and it seems to bear out my memory. Or did you mean chronoligically, after the introduction of the 350, SBC's had large journal cranks?

fastfredracing 12-10-2010 03:44 AM

Yep,the late 327's had large journal cranks. This was one of my favorite motors that I ever had. It would really wind up for a small block. I was saving it but eventually sold it off to help feed my Porsche addiction

slow&rusty 12-10-2010 03:47 AM

'68, '69 and '70.5

onewhippedpuppy 12-10-2010 03:49 AM

Follow up question, does ANYONE think the prices for first Gen cars are anything other than insane? Personally I think that the muscle car bubble is eventually going to burst, and all those $100k+ Camaros will be selling for $30k. The exception being rare cars like the ZL1, Yenkos, etc.

Then which car had the fastest 0-60 time? 1/4 mile?

I think a $30,000 1st generation Camaro is evidence of a bubble. To me the 1st gen. Camaro aspired to be what the M3 is, and then lost its way trying to front as a sports car in the days of 150hp V-8's. The reality is that they will always be worth more than I think they are, and I pretty much love them.
