Denial of service attack on Mastercard, among others

Heard about this happening yesterday. Wikileaks supporters hacked Mastercard, and some other financial sites, crashed them for a while. Supposed to be going after Amazon today, anyone know about this?

It is the Hackers(bad guys) vs Jester(good guy) That is what the radio said anyway.

This will probably end up in the dungeon, but I wanted to see if it could stay a grown up discussion.

what some folks sitting on the loo with laptop can do..

and we can't / will not shut it down..

Faceplant shut down their fan page so they went on twitter. They are saying that facebook is censoring their right to free speech. Organizing crimes is not covered under free speech…. Is it?

scottbombedout 12-09-2010 10:33 AM

Wasn't Wikileaks under cyber attack by unknown forces?

It is amazing how we are so critical of other countries blocking and censoring the Internet, but when we do it that is different. America has shown what hypocrisy really is.

For all the howling concerning how WL is treasonous or illegal, the same folks will gladly publish anything against their foes. Typical double standard.

We embrace a free press, it is in the US Constitution. Look it up if you do not understand the concept. WL is no different than any other press entity and should have the same protections.

And if America can try to defend itself, why should WL be condemned for doing the same?

There's an old saying, "Just because you can does not mean you should"

And the Constitution does not protect you from illegally obtaining the things that you publish. And there is no question that they had no legal right to anything they published.

Amazon was scheduled for attack today, however the hivemind was taken out and they need a new core first. Haven't checked to see how that it going since lunch.

Targeting the high visibility assets gets media attention, but in honesty it does no more damage to the businesses than a lunch counter sit in. The attack was on their websites - not their processing servers. Really, how many of you with Visas or Mastercards *need* to access their website every day? Minor inconvenience at best, but it makes news. That's why Visa and Master were hit yesterday.

Today is a new day, and shutting down Amazon during the shopping season? Now that is a different story. But even that will be a temporary hit. You can only ddos for so long.

After all - How long can a person sit in the loo on the Starbucks wifi?!

WL can't hide behind the Const..
to do so..
you must stand in front of it first..
even our free press..
has rules & guidelines..

Facebook is not the government. They can allow or deny whatever they want.

RPKESQ 12-09-2010 01:01 PM

Truth in government was a concept that our Founding Fathers promoted and tried to adhere to. Since when is promoting transparency a Un-American act or concept? When the NYT printed the Pentagon Papers and showed the World how the US falsified and lied about the cause of the Vietnam War, why were they not prosecuted? What is the difference between that and WL?

WL did not steal any secrets, whistle blowers did. The NYT did not steal the Pentagon Papers, what is the difference?

It is clear that the US Government is applying pressure to other Countries and businesses to try to shut WL down, all the while saying that the information WL published was unimportant. Did you all swallow that load of BS?

Why should our Foreign Policy be secret from the American people? Government secrecy is a perfect recipe for Government abuse. Where are the freedom loving Americans now?

A free press by its very nature will offend some people all the time. But it is the vital 4th leg in our Government triptych. Legislation branch, Executive Branch, Judicial Branch and the 4th Estate. All are necessary components to ensuring freedom.

schamp 12-09-2010 01:06 PM

Why don't they go after Capital One? Now that would make my day.

Rikao4 12-09-2010 01:09 PM

WL is like a fence..
receiving stolen property or info..
to say we didn't steal means nothing..

Now you are just making up conspiracy theories.

Really?

Why don't you lay out the case for your claim.

I'll start.

Then so is every news source on the planet. Let's nuke them all to:

1) Save Face

2) Continue to sell your freedom to the government

3) Become just like all other totalitarian regimes

Wow! Its a win, win for all of us.

Rikao4 12-09-2010 01:57 PM

And you know this as a fact.................how exactly?

Put it this way, if WL did the same for Iran, would you feel the same? Or would you praise WL's effort to lift the veil of government censorship and corruption?

I would bet money, that most of the critics in America would pee their pants in joy that it happened to a different country.

mikester 12-09-2010 02:32 PM

I'm a little undecided on this. My main beefs with this situation is

1) the leaks - the folks who leaked the docs are the real guilty parties.

2) If wikileaks is for so much transparency why are they hiding their sources and themselves?

That's it.
