Salvation Army's kettles feeling light
That was a headline in the local section of today's paper. I sat there thinking maybe I should dig out more change and head down to the nearest kettle and give more, than I get to this paragraph:
"“The shelter is at 85 to 95 percent capacity with larger families coming in,” he said. “We’ve got one family made up of one lady with six children and she’s expecting another. Where would we be if we had to turn her away? We can’t do that.” Now this is not a woman who took in other people's kids. They are all of hers. I feel bad for the kids, but damn this woman has no sense of responsibility. Six kids and she goes out and gets pregnant again? Does she have any idea of what life she is setting up these kids for?

Agree and we have to somehow get these people to stop having kids. She is a welfare magnet and hard to turn around in situations like this.
I just donated "in the kettle" a couple of days ago but there are limits on how much I am going to help when its people who do not seem to be helping themselves in the first place.

I've stuck some money in them but in reality, if I'm going to make any kind of large charitable donation (and I do on occasion) I want it documented and I want a tax deduct line for it.
If it's more than 100 bucks, it's worth going after that deduction, particularly with the greedy bureaucrats getting nastier about trying to take more and more of my money. So yeah, it's charity, but as with most things I do have an ulterior motive. I'd rather give the money to somewhere I think it'll do some good than to a bunch of government wasteoids who will just pi$$ it away on some idiotic, over-administrated and ineffective handout program.

I feel sorry for the children. Does the Salvation Army counsel people coming in about life-skills? I saw an ad in the classifieds looking for a life-skills teacher (not for the SA though). I'm sure the Salvation Army doesn't just throw material goods at them and push them out the door. They are a great organization IMO.

I was out and about this week and each store I visited had a SA bell ringer out front.
I donated at the first 3 stores then got to the last one and had no change left. I felt bad and told the girl that I had given all that I had already. I prefer to shop at the SA stores. You can find some great bargains and interesting items. The Habitat stores are cool for oddball things as well.
