Ebay prices - What are you smoking?

I've seen some crazy prices on Ebay for books and such, but this is nuts!

Porsche: 356 & Rs Spyders, Acceptable Books - eBay (item 150522845822 end time Dec-20-10 13:09:56 PST)

I just don't get it, do they really think someone will bid on this? What's the point of putting this on Ebay for such a high price? - maybe I am missing something.

Prices on Fuchs are nutso as well. They don't sell, make reserve or go at BIN prices.

It is rare to see a real bargain on flea-bay anymore.

At least they aren't gouging you on the shipping, that's free.

I think those hokey "how to make money on eBay" classes/work from home scams used to tell people that if they overpriced their items, people would assume they were worth more/in better condition/had some secret, undisclosed value. I think it last worked during the late 90's tech boom.

Still, you see most people demanding top dollar for their items. I only sell on eBay to unload things that would otherwise get tossed but are probably worth something to someone else. I set really low prices and hope someone bites.

Chris - I remember the same sort of scheme in the UK in the late 80's, with classic Ferraris. You could call a dealer who had a car listed for 150,000 only to find out it had sold the day before, but low and behold his friend the dealer down the road at a very similar car for 175,000. But you better move fast cause the prices are sky rocketing! Of course then the crash happened and the market in classic cars fell and your 1,000,000 Daytonas suddenly became 100,000 daytonas - ouch!

It looks like the same thing on Amazon too now:

Amazon.com: Porsche: 356 & Rs Spyders (9780760309032): Gordon Maltby, Dave Friedman: Books

NUTZ!!

All I can think is that it's for Goodwill and someone will buy it for a "good cause".

Sorry Ted but I would disagree with you. They're not saying "hey give us a donation and we'll throw this book in for free" They are just letting you know that all proceeds go to goodwill - no different than if I walk in a goodwill shop and buy a shirt for $5, everything sold by Goodwill goes to their charity work.

I've seen this time and time again on automobile books, that there is crazy pricing going on, mostly on Amazon. In fact if you'd looked at the Amazon ad, you would have seen where Goodwill got there crazy value from!

I would just say that someone at Goodwill has just wasted their time and effort and will never get this price, from a book that was obviously donated to them.

On a more positive note, it is a fantastic book
