Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I seem to remember that the RS6 was such a special car that only something like 10% of Audi dealers were authorized to work on it. Could be a problem dependant upon one's location. I'd hate to have to ship a car for repair/service, esp. out of warranty.

Now....out of left field. Given the OP's wants and needs, along with some financial advantages, have you considered an Infiniti M45 Sport, 2007-2009 vintage? They were always rated as much more of a driver's car than the Lexus. Get one with very low miles, CPO warranty, excellent reliability as a DD, style, much better than average performance for $35K or less. A couple of years ago it bettered Audi, BMW, and Merc competition in a C/D comparo. Should be rock solid for the requested 100k miles. Won't run with an M or AMG obviously, but then neither does the financial commitment.

I re-read JA's original post, and see that I missed a few things, including the snow/ice/awd answer.

There are just so many good cars. And it's such a personal thing, as evidenced by the posts here. Everything is relative.

Soul, styling, performance, 100K reliability. It's all relative too.

I always consider depreciation balancing reliability. If the car is going to depreciate $40K in the next decade, that's an extra $3500 a year I can put towards fixing stuff when it breaks on a car that isn't depreciating. I say 'extra' because the depreciating car will occasionally break in the next decade too. BTW, I feel the same way about paying a premium for a low mileage car.

Depreciation is where the older supercars win. The 996TT isn't likely to become a $10K car anytime soon, if ever. It's already lost 60% of its original value. You can buy nice ones for $35K and I think it's a bargain and won't depreciate very much from here. People pay more for 993TTs and nearly the same for 930s.

A $35K late-model M3 (or S4, or C36, or...) will become a $10K car very soon. So will a $50K two-year-old S5.
