Great video! I like his "common sense" approach! Too many people stand around pontificating when a weapon fails to fire... just clear it and continue!!

I've seen it taught as "tap, roll, rack". The roll being to roll the gun over so that any case thats causing the problem has an easier chance of falling out the ejection port.

Interesting.

I was taught to never rack the slide like that.

Too easy to get your hand caught in the injector port.

I'm a lefty with no formal training so I don't do anything "by the book" I'm sure. My 30 year old Combat Commander has never failed me but I showed the video to it just to let it know: "I WILL beat the snot out of it" if you don't behave

How were you taught? (FYI it's the "ejection port").

Racking a slide that way is a gross motor movement that can still be performed under stress. Notice he is not riding the slide forward but instead letting his hand come off the back as he releases ("slingshots") it. No way for the fingers to get caught.

Clint Smith is an awesome instructor. If you have the opportunity to train with him, please do. Highly recommended.

With that said, two is one, one is none.

There's so much more that goes along with the type 1, 2 and 3 malfunction drills, that proper instruction is the only way to get the proper tactics alongside clearing of the malfunction. Seek proper instruction from a well known and qualified instructor for the whole enchilada.

The reason people, including myself, do this is because most people shoot their own guns recreationally. I'm not in a hurry to keep blasting. If my pistol has an FTF or FTE, then I would rather determine the cause of the problem than "beat the snot out of it until it works".

Great instructor and great video. Great to know that skill "just in case".
But not necessary to enjoy plinking at the public range.

It's kind of like knowing how to drive the line and settle the car after using the curbing. Great to know. Not really necessary in daily driving.

Okay, I will make this real clear like. When a pistol doesn't go bang, it means the shiny bullet thingy didn't come out of the long round hollow thingy. Turn the pistol around and look into that hollow thingy. Then push on the curved button thingy to see if the pistol works. I do this with my garden hose pistol too.

Awesome. Now maybe I can use up that crappy Remington UMC ammo in my closet.

Good refresher/reminder....... I shoot a Glock so I never get any real world practice clearing jams.

Maybe I will borrow a 1911 for a bit to get in some practice dealing with malfunctions.

I think I've had 2 issues in the roughly 1500 rounds that I've put through my gun. I'm pretty sure that 1 was due to limp wristing. The other was a bad round of cheap ammo.
