Guitar pr0n and Wolfe's pickups

So this guy at work who is an incredible woodworker decided he would try to make a guitar. He picked out the wood and consulted with a local luthier. Having never attempted anything like this, we were talking about electronics, so I steered him to Wolfe. Finally got to play it the other day. Plays fantastic and my first experience with Mr. Mcleod's pickups was first-rate.

Steck Strat - SN. 001

It sounds amazing.

Great job! I'm jealous. I just got the blueprints for the Les Paul I'm going to make. Now I just need to find the right piece of curly maple for the top.

Glad to hear they worked out! If he can do any recordings, I'd love to hear them!
I seem to remember those took a bit of time.. stuff gets done in batches, and mostly humbuckers for a long time...I've been a bit slow at single coils lately.

Any idea how the other set worked out for him?

Dave, check Ebay... I bought a piece of maple from a place in Canada bound for a Heatley being built for me. got the piece for about $25 and had it shipped to the builder. Nice piece of wood from what I hear.. guitar not done yet, so I haven't seen it. Been in the works since '04 or so!
When looking on Ebay, be sure to inquire about the moisture content. Above 9% (I think it was) is too wet...

Dan - thanks for posting this and thanks for the kind comments everyone. It's been the most fun I've ever done with woodworking. Think I've found my niche for a while.

Wolfe - have not tried the other pups yet. Waiting for the second guitar to come back from paint - it's a traditional alder strat. will be Kandy Apple Red with a quilted maple pick guard. It should be here next week and then I'll get it put together. I'll have Dan post pics for it too.

Daughter just got home from Creighton Univ. tonight and picked it up. She absolutely loves it and it sounds exactly how she wanted it to.

For those interested - Quilted Maple came from Horizon Woods. This body is solid quilted - it looks just as good from the back side. Neck is Mahogany and the fingerboard is East Indian Rosewood. I did all the wood working but know my limitations. Sent it to Pat Wilkins in Van Nuys CA for the finish. I have about 60 hours in this one. Wolfe used Alnico-3 magnets for the pups.

Dan is going to have to teach me how to play now!

The other guitar is still in Cali for paint. I think I'll get to play it at a 'support the troops gig we're doing in Jan. I'll see what I can do about some recordings...

I talked with Wolfe this evening. He's going to make me up a set of pickups for my Les Paul replica in the coming months. W00t!
