Seriously, where do you drive where that extra inch of ground clearance makes the difference between getting there and getting stuck?

on other vehicles, the air suspension provides several extra inches

of course, once in a while, every inch counts -- or maybe the 1" just gets you stuck further back in the backcountry

Tiguan didn't even get into my top 10 when needing a new car, got the 4 cyl Outback instead.

However, I would have bought it if they had brought it out in the diesel like they originally said they would do...

So when is the Porsche version of the Tiguan coming out? Maybe it'll have air suspension.

My old Rangie had air adjustable suspension, and it was a maintenance nightmare. True, that was a L-R and this is a VW, but still.

We have the TDi version available here in the GWN.
The Tiguan is another 'pretend' mini 'sport ute'. Based upon the Jetta/Golf chassis/drive train. I didn't think anyone looking at these vehicles was worried about anything other than rain, a bit of snow or (horror of horrors) a few hundred yards of gravel driveway.

that is exactly my concern with these things, but I have a strong desire for being able to drive well on the Hwy., then turn off onto one of the numerous bad two-track roads in this (and surrounding) state and be able to get where I'm going...

The lease on our 09 tiguan is gonna end, in august of 2011,and so far it's been a good car.
It's the basic edition with no air suspension, 2.0 liter turbo engine and good on gas too. It's my wife's daily driver and she is very happy with the handling and the performance of the vehicle.
It's roomier version of the VW Golf/Jetta.

They did bring it out in Diesel.

Just can't do it in the US. Everyone else can.

No, there is no adjustable suspension option available for the Tiguan.

They want you to step up to the Toureg

I have a09 tiguan with 4 motion and it is an awsome car. I have a 1800 dirt driveway that sometimes turns into a mudhole and the tiguan rips and the ground clearance is great. It also has incline. On the highway the car drives perfect. I went from a 07 GTi because the roof line was so low I got tired of watching my friends have such a problem getting in ( 50yrs. old) the car. Also I had a 1997 993S with 30,000 miles and after driving the 993 and getting in the GTI it was night and day how much better the GTI felt. One of the biggest improvements was the electric power steering. It is great. Anyway back to the Tiguan . The power is excellent and the higher roof line is also great .I am a little concerned with future problems the moonroof may have.

So buy the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee with Quadra-Lift for 10.1" at its highest setting, or the 4Runner at 9.6".

Even the new 2011 Touareg ditched the air suspension option and has 'only' 8.5"

I have to wonder if the air suspension issues are somewhat environment related. My DISCO had it and it never failed in years of ownership. My Allroad has it and it's never given us an issue.

Maybe certain environments break the stuff down quicker. I do hear of issues on the Discos in the LR forums but it's normally an airbag that needs to be replaced, and they are less than some of the struts I've purchased recently.

Our 2006 Lincoln Navigator 4WD never had any issues, even with four-corner air-suspension in a 7000 pound truck, and we towed up to 8000 pounds. Zero issues in 102K miles, then we sold it to a local fellow who has had it for a year, no issues.
