I think I broke one of the Good Ol' boy rules...

Yep, I bought me a bottle of scotch for the holidays. The first and last time I remember having tasted scotch was back on Diego Garcia en route to the first "Sand Box"... So I poured me a little on the rocks, kicked back and took a sip... YOWZA!!! I thought I had just poured JP5 or rocket fuel down my throat!!! After thinking about the possibilities for a few seconds I decided that I would mix said scotch with a little Mountain Dew... I was surprised, the concoction tasted exactly like Southern Comfort on the rocks... I will leave my man card at the door lol...

craigster59 12-25-2010 01:05 PM

Just a little tip Bill, if you paid more than $15 dollars for the bottle under no circumstances reveal the brand. You're just setting yourself up for more ridicule.

Nope it was a small flask type bottle, the first scotch I ever had was Cutty Sark... I would have gotten Cutty Sark but they didn't have it in the small "coat pocket size" bottle. I am not a scotch drinker, but from what I remembered, it had a little different flavor to it than American or Canadian whiskey... I was just in the mood for something different... the only scotch in the small bottles that the small liquor store that I went to had was a brand called Clan Macgregor... This was like trying to drink Listerine straight.. And it didn't seem as aromatic and flavorful as the Cutty Sark that I had tried back in my youth... I think I will stick to my Vodka and Bourbon in the future lol... btw, yeah I know what you mean lol, and trust me I tried, the first attempt was room temp, no ice, just like JR Ewing would of had it...

masraum 12-25-2010 02:02 PM

I've tried to like scotch...

Hugh R 12-25-2010 02:03 PM

enzo1 12-25-2010 03:15 PM

Joe Bob 12-25-2010 03:54 PM

Scotch and SOFA

esample 12-25-2010 03:59 PM

If your scotch is older than your woman, you're in the clear. But Clan Macgregor, probably not.

legion 12-25-2010 04:13 PM

Eh. I've never liked scotch, or any whiskey for that matter.. Even the "smooth" stuff tastes like jet fuel to me.

Which is strange, because I love gin, but only with some Sweppes tonic and a twist of lime. Just something refreshing about that drink.

If I want to sip something, give me a cognac, a port wine, or some absinthe. (Sam Adams Utopias is also good.)

9dreizig 12-25-2010 04:37 PM

As long as you don't ever drink it that way outside of the trailer park you'll be ok....
BTW learning to like scotch was my senior project in college.. Rusty Nails are a good after dinner drink too (Scotch and Drambuie)

onlycafe 12-25-2010 05:07 PM

anyone who has unwanted scotch can please send it to me.

enzo1 12-25-2010 06:15 PM

I'd prefer an Ashton (an Arturo Fuente brand) with Tanqueray and tonic. The heavy cigar taste with the clean gin is quite exquisite.

(I used to be a Bombay fan, but I've found that I like the taste of Tanqueray much better and I can drink much more sans hangover.)

widgeon13 12-25-2010 06:45 PM

Scotch, an acquired taste.

Chris, give Hendrick's a try. Forget the lime....either a slice of cucumber or nothing. I bet you'll like it. I used to be a tanq/bombay guy

legion 12-25-2010 06:57 PM

Mike, I will give it a try. It may be a few months, but it will happen. I trust your opinions. I did buy a Sub-2000 after reading your opinions after all...

Shuie 12-25-2010 07:02 PM

Scotch is made by men who wear skirts.

Drink Bourbon.

+1 to single malt & nothing

That said, legend has it that at the instant a tiny splash of water hits a single malt there's a little flash of light. I may or may not have seen this...

But yes, Scotch can be foul on first taste. Even good Scotch. But speaking of foul. do you remember your first beer?

You can appreciate whiskeys of all varieties, whether it be scots, bourbon, rye, irish, canadian or the japanese stuff. Whiskey is a beautiful thing. It gives you insight into the culture and the flavors. We can all have favorites, but we should respect whiskey, regardless of it's source.

friend said u need to drink scotch everyday for 2 weeks, 2 drinks/day I did that and now I can drink and enjoy it, why : because its "not" sugary, I have to be in a certain mood.... then it's pour, smoke blend the taste and enjoy and for some reason scotch hits me harder without hangover don't do it a whole lot but just feel it when the time is right...tequila is drink of choice followed closely by gin'n' tonic

legion 12-25-2010 08:44 PM

Gin for me, followed by Rum and reposado Tequila...when I want to get my drunk on.

HHI944 12-25-2010 08:44 PM

Scotch has become a favorite and, as has been mentioned, blends nicely with a good cigar. Try a nice Talisker 10yr with a JdN DC. The Talisker 10yr has quick become a staple of my bar.

Man, I wish it weren't raining, I've got a couple Gurkha Centurions that I've been itching to break into...

tabs 12-25-2010 10:04 PM

No wonder Laddie you had to mix it..it was the Clan McGregor that dun it...now ifn yu were drinkin the MCClleun...well now that would be a different story. U woulda be tellin us how wondrfull it was now Laddie!

HardDrive 12-25-2010 10:54 PM

Balvenie doublewood. Don't like it? Bite me.

pwd72s 12-25-2010 11:14 PM

His mistake was the Mountain Dew mixer. Shoulda used root beer.

Same here until someone showed me the GOOD scotch.

Try some 12 year old Balvinie, or even the 21 year old stuff. Take a sip neat and swill it around in your mouth.

It will not treat you like the stuff you just tried, and should leave a very nice warm lasting impression in your gut!

Very true, Macallan ain't bad either.

flatbutt 12-26-2010 01:51 PM

I've currently got the Balvenie, Laphroig, Oban and Lagavulin on the shelf.

Now THAT is a good selection of some of the 'big' ones. Alas, I have a single lonely bottle of 10 yr old Glenmorangie.

Mr. Butt, I've always reckoned you were a man of distinction.

Laga 16 is my absolute favorite, followed closely by Mac Cask Strength.

But, for the newbie wanting a good scotch experience that's still authentic, Oban is hard to beat.

oldE 12-26-2010 03:39 PM

I usually stick with the Speyside single malts and blends, but sometimes something like Lagavulin or Oban is what is called for.

So many Scotches, so little time.

Happy Holidays

Seriously, I can't believe this thread has gone this far and no one has said...

Dudes... put some good scotch in a glass and sip it... no ice... drinking it cold partially numbs your tastebuds and obscures the flavor to a degree.

Sip a few glasses this way. Take it slow.

Once you discover the full taste of good scotch, you'll never go back to pouring it over ice.

Neat.
