To hell with a BMW. These days I'm happy with a good B.M.!

Why is that green font there??

Good question...but let's face it...this thread has pretty much gone to B.M.

College is an investment in the future, it will pay off many times over. It is far different than a piece of consumer electronics.

Learning how to properly read and write "screen language," and how to create media and craft visual messages can be incredibly important for future success. My "hobby" work with web technologies and rich media (audio and video) enabled a mid-stream career shift. Formal education opens some doors. Having breadth and the ability to create opens others.

So Sid, it's been a month.

How's your new Apple MacBook Pro??

porsche4life 02-01-2011 09:49 AM

Absolutely love it Eric. Made the first payment, getting ready to make another....

Really wish I had bought one of these sooner.

Good deal. You know we were just trying to help you see the evils of the world. You're a smart guy. Sounds like you made a good choice, and a month later you're still happy with your choice. That's when you know it was right for YOU.

Many of my coworkers and myself have been buying these for the last couple years and are very happy with them... they appear brand new and come loaded with only XP business w/ latest updates..... Much better than buying the cheap home use crap from Bestbuy for hundreds more IMO.

1 DELL LATITUDE D630 DC XP-2 CDRW DVD WiFi LAPTOP NR - eBay (item 170583942642 end time Dec-28-10 14:11:03 PST)

Thanks for this link, I got one for $237, and it works like a charm.

Yup, and looking like I may take another job soon with a considerable pay raise, should be able to pay this down sooner than I had intended.... I may be looking for a better DD sooner than I had originally intended as well... ;)

Ok, so my world turned itself on its head this spring, I quit my steady job, and was working sporadically at best, had injury and illness keep me out for a few weeks this summer, and I still paid the damn thing off well before the year was up. Just thought you naysayers would like to know that.

Still love my macbook, just wish I had bought it sooner....

slodave 08-30-2011 09:41 PM

Good for you! Go reward yourself and buy a watch. ;)

Sid, there are millions of ways to spend money. For what I just spent on my trip to Savannah GA I could have bought a nice new set of 17 inch wheels. Instead I enjoyed a week of fun with the wife. My laptop is a 10 year old war-horse Compaq that a friend of mine was going to throw away. I put a new $22 battery in it and a $9 PCMCIA wireless card and it works great in my garage. Slow but steady. It will be interesting to see if your Mac laptop will be working in 2021.

My under $300 Dell refurb is paid off and works perfectly too. Yeah, I could borrow/spend more on stuff, but I never was really one who enjoys lighting borrowed $100 bills on fire when the $20 bill in my wallet will do the same job and burn just as hot. ;)

nostatic 08-31-2011 07:21 AM

Tim, do you buy quality tools or do you get Harbor Freight since it'll "burn just as hot"?

It depends.... If I need an 1 1/2" big open end wrench to remove one nut, I will buy a HF. If I need a buffer to buff one or two cars with, I will buy HF.

That said.... I have accumulated more tools than most here over the years and many of the common hand types are SnapOn/Mac/Craftsman depending on when and what I got them for. So what? I still am convinced that the average college student should not be borrowing money to buy "things" that he/she does not really "need".

GH85Carrera 08-31-2011 07:46 AM

Sid is not average.

Tim, the point is that what someone "needs" can vary from person to person. To me a computer is a tool. I use it for my day job, I use it for my music, I use it for my art pursuits, I use it for entertainment. I find a Mac to be a superior tool in my hands. A refurb Compaq would not cut it.

Different strokes...

Good point.

a computer is a tool. I use it for my daily job, I use it for my engineering and design, I use it for my photography, I use it as a DVR. I find a Dell to be a superior tool in my hands. A mac-book pro would not cut it.

porsche4life 08-31-2011 08:59 AM

I found a Dell would not hold up to living in a backpack all day everyday. I also found out that Dell batteries suck

So apparently you "need" a Mac. Great.... Sid did not "need" a Mac. I mean I ultimately don't care what kind of computer he likes or whether he ends up rich or poor..... The fact remains that he came on here asking if we thought "financing" a Mac was a good idea. The fact that he paid it off still does not make it a good idea in my opinion.
