This is the REAL reason he wants a iMac!

I just created a fake, underpowered ipad by running a script that installs android marketplace on a velocity cruz reader. Works pretty good, but a bit laggy. DOes everything an android smartphone does except make calls and take pics n GPS.

I'm all amped up to hack firmware now.

rjp

I used to hack all kinds of stuff. After a while you get fed up with expensive buggy or bricked stuff. Or trying to talk your wife thru resetting your cludge.

These days all I want is to turn my schite on and be productive.

Best reason yet.

And you say Apple will finance ten of them, for 6 months, free? Where do I sign up...

Wouldn't want you to have an aneurysm or anything.

Jeff-

Your ability to purchase the things you want might be a little different than a college student that needs to finance a computer. If you want to buy a $1500 coffee machine, $6500 speaker wire, $2000 MacBook Pro, or a $6000 latex doll, then why would I care? If you can afford it, I hope you enjoy it in good health.

If you're looking for my approval: Go ahead, I approve..... and quit being so mean to your sister, and take out the trash!

porsche4life 12-28-2010 02:57 PM

This was my plan, my old Dell is dying fast though. I fear it won't last three months.

Take it for what it's worth but heres some advice from someone about your age who went from a top of the line ThinkPad to a Macbook Pro. I made good use out of both of the machines through engineering school where I could justify the cost of both. I like my Mac a lot for many of the reasons you liked your roomate's so I won't try to convince you to buy a PC. They are nice machines and arguably worth the price if you can afford it. I have always been stubborn so if i wanted something bad enough, I would not compromise and I would buy it, but only after thinking about it hard and making sure I could afford it. I think the advice said here a few times that you should not finance a laptop is good advice. I have paid for everything I own outright with cash (Lexus, 911S, motorcycle, macbook...) but was only able to because I worked my ass off. Most of the satisfaction of owning these things is knowing that you've put in the work to be able to buy them and enjoy them. You said you can pay off the computer in 3-4 months... then I suggest you save for 3 months and buy it then outright. Thats not a long time. Get what you want you won't be disappointed, just wait a bit longer and do not finance it.

tangerine911S 12-28-2010 03:11 PM

Then I would save every penny and reevaluate when the Dell dies.

If I could edit your thread title for you, it might read:

Ask for an opinion on Pelican OT, bad idea?

Why yes, yes it is...

Cheers,
JR

porsche4life 12-28-2010 05:03 PM

Good point JR....

stomachmonkey 12-28-2010 06:20 PM

How many pages can we get this too? Maybe it can become the official "ask and ye shall receive thread".

nynor 12-28-2010 08:05 PM

did you really need to ask, sid?

You posed a dumba$$ question to a bunch of folks who are quite frankly smarter and a hell of a lot more experienced than you and recieved a "smackdown in your bs logic" from the "group collective", yet you continue to pout like a gd crybaby. You've been treated kindly on this thread ...grow up!

That's a bit harsh.

Frankly every stupid person I know does NOT ask for advice or guidance.

Well aren't we a gd ray of sunshine....

There are a lot of smart people on this forum, many of who's wisdom I value. I may not always follow their guidance, but I do take it under consideration. Hence why I ask questions, some that are rather regrettable. I could have just bought the damn computer, paid it off and never said a word. You guys would be none the wiser, and I would have a shiny new computer.

stomachmonkey 12-28-2010 08:58 PM

Don't sweat it Sid.

I tell my staff all the time, "It's better to ask a stupid question than to do something stupid"

I agree. But what was Stupid here was what happened after the question.

What is impressive is how many different approaches were put forth -all to help a (resistant) fellow pelican head .

And you would be $600 further in over your head.

At some point you're going to discover that going into debt for silly wants is just that - silly. Or stupid if you prefer. You can either get to that point the "easy way" by availing yourself of the wisdom of others who have already learned that lesson, or you can repeat their mistake, expecting different results (what's that clinical definition of insanity again?) Either way, you'll end up in the same place - one path will get you there with more money in your pocket however.

Unless you NEED (not "want") the MacBook or can write it off, I'd put the $600 in your pocket, go back to your studies and forget about it. If you really want it, you'll figure out a way to come up with the $600 and pay for it outright. If you honestly have to finance 600 bucks, you really shouldn't be meddling with credit at all. Seriously.

But what does anyone on here know. Feel free to go right ahead and make the same stupid mistakes. Bankers and credit card companies love it when people are compelled to do so. They profit mightily from it.

A930Rocket 12-29-2010 04:34 AM

I didn't read all 83 pages, but I hope your backing up your current laptop just in case it croaks.

I probably was a bit harsh in my previous response, but go back and read your first two posts on this thread. You, Paul (Seahawk), Todd (Nostatic) and a few others simply handed out some VERY bad advice early on (while the group collective was indeed SPOT ON), and young Sidney latched on. Now everyone of you are smart as heck, and I don't why YOU flipped in less than an hour saying "Do It...". Doesn't matter what Sid thinks of any of us...bad advice is bad advice and a WHOLE bunch of us were attempting to guide him down a "better" path than the one he was clearly on. My apologies to you Sidney...it was a bit harsh, but I tell it like it is...doesn't matter if you're a college student or an executive in a corner office. If by chance we ever meet...I'll FINANCE your beer :). This horse is dead...I'm out here...
