Did ya'all get yer black eyed peas?

For the Yankees and the foreigners out there that don't know better, one of the traditions in the southern parts of the USA is to eat some black eyed peas on new years day.

The wife and I go to the same local restaurant every year on New Years Day. They bring a small cup of black eyed peas to everyone but I always order some more as one of my two side dishes.

Eating black eyed peas on News Years Day are supposed to bring good luck all year. I like black eyed peas so eating them today is not a real burden.

It is like saying drinking a beer on the first day of the year brings good luck. I managed to drink a beer or two today as well.

So how many of you Pelicans ate some black eyed peas today?

Blackeyed peas cooked with the ham bone leftover from Thanksgiving, cornbread cooked in my well-seasoned cast iron skillet, Blackeyed pea salad, fresh spinach and a big slice of pie. Will have a second slice of pie shorrtly.

Doesn't get much better than that and my grandmother would rollover in her grave if we didn't have blackeyed peas today.

I got canned black eyed peas in my stocking every year as a child and I loved it (my parents were Southren!) Due to this thread I went to the local grocery store to get some o'those peas - to no avail. They were completely sold out. Bummer!

WTF is hog jowl? My Sicilian grandparents ate everything off of an animal save for hooves and horns...but jowls?

The cheek of the hog. It is smoked/cured and is much like salty smoked ham encased in fat. Sorta like a bigh chunk of unsliced bacon. Much of the fat cooks away seasoning the peas or greens and leaving the "ham" part.

Bought a bag of dried Blackeyed peas the other day but haven't had the chance to cook them. They'll end up cooked with ham hocks and eaten with corn bread patties.
