House Hunters on HGTV

That show is killing me. Makes me wonder why I still live in the SF Bay Area where $650k only gets you a 4 bd/2.5 ba, fixer-upper older home on a small lot next to a rental. One of the episodes on today was in the Palm Desert where a young couple bought a short sale, 2800 sq ft, newer home with granite counters on a large lot for $252k! Of course they'd have to deal with 120 deg summers but that's what pools are for.

Yea the range of what you get for the money is amazing. I've really been enjoying House Hunters International. The Brits. are nuts for taking on major rebuilds and renovations just about any where. Fun to watch.

it can be really beautiful out in the Palm area, but yes, stupid hot.

I lived for a while in a 1.8 mil apartment off the beach here in Hermosa and it was in worse shape than the $62k house I rented back in MO for $185 a month.

I had a friend just buy his first home, a 3 bedroom 2 bath with a 3 car detached garage on 4 acres for something like $70k back home. Here in los angeles, a similarly sized compound, in the hood, would run you 10x as much for much worse living conditions.

I will never figure it out.

I saw that you could get a 4 BR 3 BA, 1,700 sq ft house on the beach, with a 2 BR guest house and another house for the caretaker for $175k. Only problem is, the house is in Ecuador. Not sure how stable that government is.

I TiVO all the episodes...the only part of the international show that roasts me is the occasional griping by the American folks looking for a place: "I need a bigger dishwasher, is there a garbage disposal...back in Kansas City", etc.

Please to shut your pie-hole.

+1. saw an episode where a young family just "had" to have a place in Fiji...drove me nuts how stupid they were being. their list of requirements for their vacation home was ridiculous.

There was one of those the other night. The scientists that were moving back to Denmark, IIRC. She was annoying.

I am just stunned when I see how much a house costs in different places in the U.S. My house is 3000 sq. ft. and is on 2 acres right in the middle of town. Paid $257,000 for it in 2006. Same house in California probably sells for over $1 million. No doubt the weather is better in LA than in Missouri, but who can afford to move there?

$1 mil wouldn't come close to paying for even half the land in one of the moderately desirable neighborhoods in LA.

Unfortunately, not uncommon behavior for a great many of us, thus:

"Ugly American is an epithet used to refer to perceptions of loud, arrogant, demeaning, thoughtless and ethnocentric behavior of American citizens mainly abroad, but also at home. Although the term is usually associated with or applied to travelers and tourists, it also applies to US corporate businesses in the international arena."

Them what's got the bucks? Home prices all boil down to: location (location, location), supply and demand and charging what the traffic will bear.

It's not uncommon for a pos house to sell for what might seem to be a ridiculously high price - and then be torn down and a new house built; the value of the land the pos sits on justifies it.

My parents bought a house in Westport, CT back in 63 for $27k. That house now sells for over a million. It was a plain jane 4 BR, 2 bath house on an acre. They sold it in 76 for $125k and bought a HUGE 4 side brick house in Atlanta. Well, it seemed huge back then. Now, it's just another 3-4k house, but nice.

Come on down and bring you bike and we can go for a bike ride. Beer's on me before and after the ride. A few months ago, we were thinking about buying some rental/investment property there as well. Something run down. A 3+2 really, near Palm Springs. My next door neighbors own a vacation home in Palm Springs. They are thinking about the same thing in the near by areas. the gay community has driven the property value way up. My neighbors are, well you know... Its only two hours away. Hey, 640k for a 4+2.5 isn't that bad. So many fixers at that size are going for much more then that around here.

I just saw this lovely house in North Carolina. I have sent resumes to find a job there...

405 Fleming Road Youngsville NC Home for Sale - Real Estate Listings - MLS #1754317 - Realtor.com®

In joysey, for almost twice the price, I got 1800 sq ft sitting on 0.2 acres with 1 car garage and no basement.

Cool show, I watch it all the time. x2 on the international version, although some of the buyers are annoying.

I'm thinking about moving this year and didnt realize how 'cheap' the middle of the country could be.
