I Remember My First Time

Welding

Today was my son's first time welding.

Wire fed MIG. I found some spare metal and went through the basics with him. We started by writing his name at different voltage and spool speed settings, then ran a bead along and angle, then welded two pieces together.

It was great. He did well for his first day. The pic below was the first of the series, he got much better as the morning went along. We cut the welds, smoothed the edges and re-attacked!

He really enjoyed it, as did I.

That's an excellent skill to have and a great one to pass along to a son (or daughter)!

Nice work !

Welding a truly noble skill, keep him interested. Being with Dad in the shop is priceless.

I still do a project for for fun and profit now and then. My kid's are interested Girls even.

Great skill for hobby use or occasional use on the job. Not so good for a professional welder career. Any welder I know looks pretty bad by the time they are in their 40s. Of course the fumes don't seem enough for most of them, so they smoke a couple of packs on top of that.

The guy that rent's the building across from my warehouse is a welder.

I thought that he was 50. He's damn fit and can move anything. Today he told me that he's turning 40!

I remember my first time as well...the anticipation...the sparks...the wondering if it was a lasting bond...
