I drank the best wine I have ever tasted last night

Spanish, 130 year old vines, only 11 acres,

Wow!

Termanthia, I had to zoom into the pic to read. I guess that's the sort of thing that comes with high res.

What were some of the characteristics of the wine?

Looks like it tastes good; unfortunately it's out of my self-imposed price range by a factor of 10.

Hmm, $200 a bottle. Yeah, I won't be running out to pick up a couple of bottles any time soon.

Since when were you willing to spend up to $20 on a bottle of wine?

We had a Martin Ray Chardonnay on Friday night. For the price, it was an excellent wine. It was about as good as Cakebread, for about $49 vs. $79 (Restaurant prices).

Drinking cheap wine out of a Tinkerbell mug, now THAT is the epitome of class! Let me guess, that's the kitchen in your trailer?

I had that! It is very good. Now, I'm not any sort of wine connoisseur, but recently, I've found a wine that is very good, very cheap, and mild: Macaroni Gril chianti. It is $10 for a 1.5 liter bottle, so it is dirt cheap, but it is a gentle dry Italian style chianti with no rough edges. Can't say enough good about this stuff!

Hey- It can knock your bad cholesterol down down a few points too!

$200 !?! . . I thought Spain was hard up for cash.

Well, I'm with N! on this one. There are quite a few outstanding Italian Chiantis.

I've been really liking a 2006 Chianti Classico. ... great stuff, and easy to go thru @ $15/bottle 2006 Fattoria di Petroio Chianti Classico by Fattoria di Petroio (Sangiovese Red Wine)

Is that the restaurant price or the Bev Mo price? We buy Gallo by the gallon.

Anyone familiar with Apothic Red? The wine is a blend of zinfandel, Syrah and Merlot.

My wife had a glass with dinner at a restaurant a few weeks back and loved it - I sampled and enjoyed it too. The waiter mentioned there were only 2 more glasses available and so he held the remainder for her - and she did have another glass. On the way out we met the owner and mentioned the wine. He started carrying it a while back, and can't keep it stocked. He helped us out by telling us it's actually carried by our local Kroger store. Next trip out for groceries, we browse over to the wine section and find a clerk stocking that section. We couldn't remember the correct name to begin with, but it was enough for her to lead us right over to the shelf. Three bottles left, and she tells us she has 2 more cases to restock that product, and that she can't keep it on the shelf!. I've browsed the web and found very positive reviews across the board - here's an example:

In the glass: Apothic red wine is a deep, burly sort of crimson to inky-blackish red with a completely opaque center going out into a deeply painted blood-ruby rim definition and seriously high viscosity.

On the nose: The wine immediately reveals layers of ripe, opulent black fruit with dominance by black currants and boysenberries, then eucalyptus, oak, creme de cassis, creme brulee, vanilla, cherry jam and blackberry sorbet. It is a fabulous and complex nose for a California wine, with tons of class coming out.

On the palate: It is a veritable smorgasbord of flavors, highlighted by black cherry fruit, minerals, mint, earthy — almost chewy — notes of blackberries, a firmly structured set of tannins and solid backbone for decent aging ability. The midpalate is powerful with black fruit and minerals, going into the long and tasty finish that is laden with forest berries, licorice root, fern and elder fruit. It is a superb winemaking effort and a blend that defies the pricing category it is in.

Oh - it's $8.99 a bottle.

I paid $138.00, Tempranillo Grapes, purple ink in color, full and velvety in the mouth, blackberries, nutmeg, vanilla. The finish of this wine was long, long, long.

I dont make a habit of paying this for wine, but since I took a few years off from racing I have been building a wine collection for the last few years. I just hope I live long enough to enjoy all the wine.

winemaker's notes:
100% Tinta de Toro.

Extremely rich and complex, the nose is showing a multitude of ripe red and black fruits (redcurrant, raspberries, cassis, blackberries) with notes of liquorice, truffle, balsamic and spices (cedar, nutmeg and black pepper), all perfectly integrated. The intense aromas evolve nicely in the glass, slowly opening up to more intense and complex notes.

On the palate, Termanthia is an incredible expression of the Toro terroir which requires patience in its appreciation. First the wine offers an impressively round, velvety and simply delicious mouth feel. Then the sensation of power and strength grows even more perfectly balanced with concentrated, firms and silky tannins, offering an experience of both weight and liveliness on the palate. The finish is extremely long and complex with a wide range of aromas, including dark fruits, chocolate, truffle, mineral and toasted notes.

critical acclaim:
"The 2007 Termanthia is, like the 2007 Numanthia, a bit more accessible than its 2006 counterpart. That is to say that it should begin to become civilized with a mere 6-8 years of cellaring and should offer a drinking window extending from 2016 to 2037.

The Wine Advocate

"Glass-staining purple. Exotic, pungent scents of cherry-cola, potpourri and white pepper, plus a sexy note of sandalwood. Very fresh in the mouth, with intense, floral-accented black raspberry and bitter cherry flavors that become sweeter and spicier with aeration. Blends vivacity and power smoothly, finishing with nervy mineral cut and a lingering note of spicecake. Like the Numanthia, this looks like it will drink well young and age well on its balance rather than power."
94 Points
International Wine Cellar

"This alluring red packs a lot of flavor into a plush texture, with boysenberry, floral, cinnamon, licorice and smoke notes. Firm, fresh and balanced, with a long, focused finish. Drink now through 2017."
93 Points
Wine Spectator

"2007 Toro Termanthia Termanthia is a single-vineyard wine, selected from tinta de toro vines that are more than 100 years old. The wine made its name as a voluptuous red of enormous proportions; this vintage holds to the style, with more energy in its flavors than in the past. Vibrant acidity cuts through the wine's ripeness, infusing the tannins with nerve and tension. The structure manages to keep the intensity of the flavor from feeling overwhelming. This will benefit from at least five years in the cellar, to serve with veal braised in red wine."

I have really taken a liking to Chianti and Pinot Noir. I was never really into red's, but damn I can drink these all day long.

Forget Chardonnay and bring on the Red Wine. Looks like I need to start shopping for the Apothic Red.
