Long after you all have shot off all your ammo shooting at Zombies..I will still be picking off marauders and other assorted villains. I kin shoot the eye out of a nat at 200 yards...

I think I should stop looking at these threads. I like the top one best.

How are you supposed to mount an EOTech holosight to one of those?

The rifle is good enough, but I am not, as I need a 33 round clip to hit the target once.

tabs 01-19-2011 03:33 PM

Very nice Henry...didja ever shoot it?

Maybe not the eye of a gnat at 200 yards, but my flintlock Tennessee Mountain Rifle will stay on a standard clay bird all day long at that range. My standard load is 100 grains of Goex FFg under a .495" diameter round ball with a .015" thick pillow ticking patch lubed with T/C Natural Lube 1000+. That's one hell of a tight patch and ball combination, and requires swabbing the bore every shot, but it's as accurate as many modern center fire rifles. Going with a .490" diameter ball and a .012" patch eases loading considerably, and it's still an honest two minute of angle rifle.

Very cool rifles, tabby. You too, Henry.

Built from a kit when I was about 19 years old, this rifle has accounted for a number of deer since:

Very nice Jeff, I think I should put one of those on my to build list.

sca037 01-20-2011 07:01 AM

I only have one, but it's an original 1863 U.S. Springfield caplock conversion.
It's been in the family for a while and is in very shootable condition, but I've never tried it........

Jeff Higgins 01-20-2011 08:05 AM

Cool musket, Brian. It doesn't look like any kind of conversion, however. '63's were originally caplock, and it doesn't look like a Trapdoor conversion. It's still a .58 caliber front-stuffer, isn't it?

Drdogface 01-20-2011 08:09 AM

Yes, looks all original to me. We did shoot these when I was in High School as a part of a re-enactment group. There were not repro's at the time. I'd love to own a nice original

cbush 01-20-2011 08:51 AM

Speaking of 1863 Springfields- I have one that seems to have a different stock design. Any ideas what it is? Also I am missing the ramrod for it. Suggestions on where to find one?

Thanks-http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1295545821.jpg

Looks like it was just "sporterized" by cutting the stock down. Not so common in those days, but boy did it take off after WWI and WWII. Check Dixie Gun Works for a ramrod.

Thanks Jeff! I wondered about it. Appreciate the recommendation on parts.

OK the conversion was conjecture on my part, maybe it's been a caplock all along then.
It's actually 45 caliber, and in spite of that and being a bit shorter than others of the same vintage looks authentic.....and even has the correct front & pop-up rear sight.

Brian

I just got this email from the builder of this flintlock.
Quote:

Hi Henry,
Wow, that brings back some old memories. I vaguly recall this rifle. If you remove the barrel you should see a date of mfg under the underside of the barrel. From the pictures:
Bill Large Barrel
modern flintlock (can't remember supplier)
rest I pretty much hand built including all stocking and inlays, etc. from scratch.
I was in Roseburg, OR at the time and would judge the rifle was built around 1967 or so. It was roughly a copy of a Berks County, PA style rifle.
Appears the tang screw and rear part of the barrel needs to be resettled into the stock. It should not stick up like that.
I did not do the engraving. This was done by an engraver friend for me in Myrtle Creek, OR. Later I learned to do my own engraving in the early 70s, which turned out to be one of my shinging touches to my rifles and of much higher quality. I am 72 now, still work full time, still have all my gun making equipment. Haven't made a rifle in years, but plan to when I retire.
Enjoyed the pics, not bad work for a kid then about 25 YO. Long time ago......
Thanks for sharing with me..
Andy Fautheree
