iPad and iPhone printing to any Windows 7/vista/XP printer

I thought this was worth sharing.

Background: Every time I have to replace the ink cartridges in my old inkjet printer, I get the bug for a new printer. I want wireless printing so my wife and kids can print from their computers without my PC turned on. I figured I should get one that will also print from our iPad and my iPhone. I took the plunge and bought a new HP officejet with wireless printing and eprint for the iOS devices. Unfortunately, the printer died after 10-12 pages with a bad print-head. I took it back to sams club and tried another. This one died after 8 pages! I took this one back and walked. Bye, bye HP...

I started searching for other compatible printers. Unfortunately, there aren't any official printer except HP. I did stumble on this forum post that describes how to setup airprint on a windows machine to allow iOS 4.2 devices to print to a shared printer. Evidently, the software is buried in the iTunes setup package. It works great!

I didn't get a new printer. I spent ~$100 on two sets of ink cartridges instead. Now I can waste ink with the iPhone and iPad too....
