Yeah, I'm a wussy...edumecate me on heated clothing
Does anyone have input on heated clothing?
Is it better to have heated undergarments or over garments.....IOW, glove liners as opposed to heated gloves, undershirt versus heated jacket. Who makes the best bang for your buck product? |

For what? Motorcycle riders have a lot of heated vests, gloves, etc. Might want to check one of those forums. I heard about a guy with a convertible wiring up a vest to be used in his vert with the top off in the winter.

Have used it for years on the BMW bike. Unfortunately I cannot recommend anyone as the clothing (a vest and heated grips) are from the factory in my case.
That said, I love them and would never ride in cold temps without it. Have used the vest in a car and it still works great.

I saw a story on the news about heated jackets and gloves last week.
Columbia Sportswear is making it. It looks interesting but the cost of the jacket was around $800. There is a little switch on the jacket that lights up when turned on.

I've used a Gerbings jacket on the bikes for several years now. Makes a big difference in comfort, even though my daily commute isn't too far. I can feel the heat before I'm out of the driveway. I've started using their gloves this year if it's in the 20's or lower, a bit of a pita to hook up though.

Gerbings jacket liner and G3 gloves for me. Widder is good too.

Used Gerbing since 1977. wouldn't be without it on the bike. Located in the tiny hamlet of Union, WA. (On Hood Canal)

Gerbings jacket liner for me as well. I never leave for a multi day ride without it. Make sure you get the heat troller for it as well, so you can regulate the heat. I feel the same about my heated gear as I did about my Cool shirt for my race car. "Why did I wait so long?"

never seen a piece of heated gear that wasn't a huge disappointment/pain in the ass. if on the bike, a set of dirtbike style hand guards wil keep the wind off your fingers. and make a surprising difference. for all other applications, i got one of these...

Layers are the secret to keeping warm.
Poly-prop underwear/socks to wick the moisture away from the body. The body sweats even if your just sitting. Then a layer of light weight cotton. Then a layer of polar fleese. Then a water resistant outer layer. If you add heated clothing, put them in the middle of the cotton fleese layer.

Anyone tried the Gerbing battery powered vest liner?
It says the batteries can heat the vest to 135F for 2 hours or 85F for 10 hours - I imagine it has variable temp control. I wouldn't need long periods of heat, that would be fine. Core Heat Vest Liner - Gerbing's Heated Clothing Edit: okay, I found some reviews. High temp (the 135F in the specs) translates to 90F measured on the inside surface of the vest, the battery lasts about 2-3 hours at that setting. The battery is only about 4 oz and $40, carrying a second one wouldn't be a big deal. The vest is very thin, you'd wear it under all other outer layers. So, would something like this be useful for two-wheel commutes or similar situations, where you only need a couple hours of help staying warm? Or is a vest at 90F just not going to make a difference? Looks like Gerbing is the class act of the extreme cold bike outfits. They have a thinly disguised outlet for the closeouts and discontinued items.
