Any Bow Hunters here?

My daughter wanted a bow for xmas, she is interested in hunting with me in the future (she's only 8 right now) and since I have only been a rifle hunter until now, I decided to take the plunge.

Santa brought her a nice starter bow (Diamond Nuclear Ice) and we have had fun shooting it in the basement into a block target.

After late season white tail hunting in NE last weekend, I decided to take the plunge and went out and shot a bunch of bows. I ended up with a Matthews after doing some research on the internets and with my friends. I am pretty excited to start practicing.

So any other bow folks here?

Bill

Here, and I think Aigel (George) is. Vash and I commend your choice of Matthews . Which model? Some of the best times to be in the Mtn's are during the rut, sneakin around. Bows now are sooo easy to shoot well right out of the box. Good luck to you and you daughter.

It's a different than hunting with a gun. A lot more up close and personal. Your shot hast to be extremely well placed. Most of the time, you have to track the game. You also need to study the arrow if it passes through and determine what was hit. That will determine how far the animal may go. I'm sure about turkey, but I was taught to wring the birds neck (break it) as soon as I picked it up.

The first bird I shot, I hit in the neck. The guide that was showing me the ropes, described how to give a quick twist as you hold onto the head. I did, body of the bird went flying - not under it's own power anymore - about 5 feet. I was left holding the head.

It's great that your daughter wants to get into hunting. Just understand that it's not quite the same as shooting an animal with a rifle.

Thanks Jim, my daughter has some years in front of her before she can go with me.

I agree about being in the mountains during the rut. Typically I am in the mountains during the freezing cold, battling snow and winter weather at 10,000 feet here in Colorado.

I felt the most comfortable shooting the Z7 Extreme.

Thanks slodave. I agree about it being a little bit more up close and personal. The last elk we got I brought home on the way to the butcher, and my daughter really showed some interest in looking it over and asking questions.

I have a lot to learn, and I am interested in learning!

vash is very particular about what he hunts. It has to be smaller than a raccoon, and larger than a hog. Tricky.

Archery Enthusiast & Matthews fan here as well, I have been hunting with a bow since I was in my early teens. It's eye ball to eye ball hunting.

Both my Girls are archer's however no hunting at this point. They do like the deer targets?

Here's a goat I got a couple years ago in Wy. Been down near Hotchkiss, Co. for elk...and up near 25 Mesa for deer and elk by Grand junction. Connected on a doe at last light, went out in the a.m. but a bear beat me to her All part of the circle of life.

Thanks Vash, I really did like how the Exreme shot.

That's a nice goat low, we are going to WYO this year for them, we have some private land we can hunt (hopefully, we are still finalizing the details).

Here! Here!

Not a complete nut about it but I like it. I only have a couple big game animals under my belt. A hog with my long bow and a buck with my training wheels equipment. Missed the king of the mountain this year making noise pulling back the bow. By the time he moved out into shooting position I was shaking like a leaf from exhaustion and missed. But of course I'll try again next year ... armed hiking.

If you are in a good deer area (NOT California) where you can stand hunt, it must be great for a kid. Here in CA you better teach your kid how to shoot a rifle.

George

Cliff: That's a Legacy...1 down from the switchback. A friend is getting into shooting so I'm letting him use it right now. Bill you need to get a double bull pop up blind. Very comfortable for 2, set up over water in Wy. and watch the show. I HATE shooting out of tree stands...6' is too high. I'm mostly a spot and stalk guy. CBA (Ca. Bowmen Hunters) is having a dinner this weekend...thinking of showing up and see if any of the donated hunts go cheap. Currently putting in for Az. elk...hard to draw, but so worth it. Only 8 hrs drive intead of 16 to your neck of the woods. Here's the shot on that goat:
