it is also the thread that those suffering in Windows upgrades enjoy viewing with wry amusement

While that does suck it's not Apples fault that the OP did not check the system requirements.

What's a boxed copy of Snow Leopard cost, oh yeah, $29. Not exactly highway robbery to get current.

What would an upgrade from XP to Win 7 have cost? Oh yeah, XP to Win 7 requires a clean install.

I know, build your own box for $300 and everything will be fine.

You should never upgrade and OS given the option. Always do a clean install, regardless of windows, mac, aix, whatever.

Well, yeah, if your OS vendor isn't capable of actually producing something that is upgradeable.

Debian -stable for the win :)

I have a 7-8 Macs of various ages, makes, models, processors between home and the office.

The one thing that they all have in common is the OS image.

Starting with the original OS X on a PPC it has always been an upgrade.

When I buy new machines I clone the most current one to the new one so they all start out identical. All my software, files, permissions, everything.

Have not had an issue at all, never, ever.

Never lost any data. Never had to go chasing down drivers and other oddball stuff I need to do my job.

I do admit YMMV.

Still like to know how it's the vendors fault that the customer did not educate themselves on what they were buying and what it required.

Also find it amusing that the OP has no issue with shelling out $1,000 but balks at $29.

If OP had done his due diligence then one of two things would have happened, he would have spent $1,029 or $0.

Way back in the day I worked at a Ski Shop.

Sell this kid a new ski package.

He comes back to get them after the bindings have been mounted.

Leaves store but is back in 5 minutes and wants to return them.

???? Why?

His mother chimes in, "They don't fit inside the car"

You don't have a rack? You should have a rack.

"Now you are trying to get me to spend more money? I want to return them for something smaller."

:rolleyes::rolleyes:

OS 10.5 dropped support for every PPC under 867mHz; OS 10.6 is Intel-only.

Please note that the last PPC came out in late 2005. The last 867mHz PPC came out in 2002.

So, lamenting that you can't run OS 10.6 on your 867mHz PPC is IMO kind of a non-starter. It's like complaining about 1/4 mile times for your Subaru Justy.

You may not know what you're missing. Chances are a clone does not have the correct kernel level drivers or components to make optimum use of your new machine. And any problems that you may have, known or unknown tend to follow the clone or upgrade.

My Ubuntu install upgraded from 10.4 to 11 so transparently that I did not notice. All for free.

They are both 2.6 kernels, so that's not surprising. More like a patch really.
