Pissed off at apple for the first time

After waiting several days for my new Ipad to come in the mail, I figured that it would be an easy process to set up, like most apple products...

When I turned the Ipad on, plugged it into the computer, and opened Itunes, nothing happened....I read on the Ipad instructions that you need the latest version of Itunes, okay, no big deal....

I attempted to download the latest version of Itunes from the apple website only to find that there was an error and it would not download...

I spoke to an online Apple representative, only to find out that my MACBOOK is version 10.4.11, and in order to download the newest version of Itunes, I need version 10.5.8 (or something like that). The online representative said that I would need to purchase a new MACBOOK BOX SET in order to sync my NEW IPAD WITH MY COMPUTER...

I now have an appointment with the Apple Genius Bar because I want these issues taken care of, so I can come home with a fully functioning IPAD....

It would have been nice to know this information before spending almost $1000 for something that I cannot even use at this time.

wonderful.

The real miracle is that Apple has been able to convince people that it's software and hardware is somehow immune to software and hardware problems.

Gogar 01-17-2011 06:42 PM

I went through the exact same thing when I got my iPhone4.

If you (or a neighbor or a friend) has a mac with OS 10.5x or 10.6x you can install it on your macbook and everything's fine.

I don't categorize this as a 'problem', Chris; IMO it's 'planned obsolescence', with dual benefit both for the manufacturer, who gets to sell new products, and the consumer, who benefits from current software/hardware combos that work with each other. 126coupe's MacBook is at least four years old, and it's not even 'obsolete', he just has to jump through a hoop. A hoop that is free, if he's resourceful.

The extreme example of what I'm trying to say is that Windows Vista doesn't work on a 386, for good reason.

The iPad page on Apple's website does say that the minimum requirements for the Mac include Mac OS X v10.5.8 or later. But, I understand, that is kind of frustrating. Return the iPad and buy the next version down (you must have bought the max spec'd out one to spend that much!) so that the total cost of iPad and a Mac OS upgrade are the same as what you meant to spend.

mine worked fine with my PC..

RWebb 01-17-2011 07:03 PM

don't worry it will be obsolete in a couple of months anyway

Not immune, less problematic.

While that does suck it's not Apples fault that the OP did not check the system requirements.

What's a boxed copy of Snow Leopard cost, oh yeah, $29. Not exactly highway robbery to get current.

What would an upgrade from XP to Win 7 have cost? Oh yeah, XP to Win 7 requires a clean install.

I know, build your own box for $300 and everything will be fine.

Sorry for the off topic post, but does anybody have a boxed version of 10.5 they want to get rid of? Neighbor dumped a Power Mac tower with a G5 processor on the street. I picked it up to play with it and noticed is was on 10.4 as well.

Looking forward to getting the new iPad in April.

Thanks! Beer sounds good.

I bought the Snow Leopard upgrade too for $29, but that one is Intel only. Not sure what I will do with the Tower. It must weight about 60lbs.

wonderful.

Get back at them: go on ptp network, download a 10.5 system on a usb key, upgrade your laptop for free and make it work. When computer companies try to screw with me, I screw with them...

I need better neighbors... my Mac desktop is a dual G4 from 2002. :(

I'm guessing the thrift store HI944 mentioned isn't in the Charleston, SC area?

PorscheGAL 01-18-2011 09:02 AM

Can't you just do a Software Update and get the version you need?

You can only update to the 'top' of the current OS you have, like 10.4.11, or 10.5.x, etc.

So, he has to find at least 10.5, but might as well do 10.6.

Aah.

id10t 01-18-2011 09:38 AM

Is 10.6 even available for PPC processors?

I guess this is the thread where us Linux desktop and Android tablet users come to point and laugh right?
