FULTON, Miss. — When Neil Brown got high on bath salts, he took his skinning knife and slit his face and stomach repeatedly. Brown survived, but authorities say others haven't been so lucky after snorting, injecting or smoking powders with such innocuous-sounding names as Ivory Snow, Red Dove and Vanilla Sky.

Some say the effects of the powders are as powerful as abusing methamphetamine. Increasingly, law enforcement agents and poison control centers say the bath salts with complex chemical names are an emerging menace in several U.S. states where authorities talk of banning their sale.

From the Deep South to California, emergency calls are being reported over exposure to the stimulants the powders often contain: mephedrone and methylenedioxypyrovalerone, also known as MDPV.

Sold under such names as Ivory Wave, Bliss, White Lightning and Hurricane Charlie, the chemicals can cause hallucinations, paranoia, rapid heart rates and suicidal thoughts, authorities say. The chemicals are in bath salts and even plant foods that are sold legally at convenience stores and on the Internet. However, they aren't necessarily being used for the purposes on the label.

From the article it seems the bath salts are sold in small pouches at convenience stores for about $20. That sounds like something to get high with to me.

Totally agree. Who in the world sits around looking around the house thinking "wonder what will happen if I snort or inject this?"

Will give them a break, drink Jack Daniels, it works pretty well and is legal once you are over 21!

This isn't the same stuff as epsom salts, is it? I use that once every few years because I have ingrown toenail issues and it softens things up for when I go in there to cut it out. I have one now I'm hoping gets better before I have to resort to this. I've also gone to a lot of foot massage places in China that use some exotic herbs and spices for foot baths and it's pretty cool stuff. Never occurred to me to snort the stuff though.

At what point do we just accept that stupid people will hurt themselves or find a way to get high with just about anything? Trying to chase down every item that is potentially dangerous usually ends up hurting mostly the people that use the stuff legitimately while the junkies move on to something else.

Let's just accept that there are stupid people among us and stop trying so hard (at great expense and hardship for everyone else) to stop them from fulfilling their mission in life: to act as a cautionary tale for the rest of us.

I don't understand what people are trying to achieve. Marijuana is pretty much legal out here. The liquor store is up the road. How far out are you trying to get?

When we were kids, they warned you to not smoke. Yeah, the stuff would kill you, but it would take 40-50 years to do it. Meth and all these new variants will destroy you in a few short years. Its not a hypothetical. How can these idiots ignore that?

I know this sounds very harsh and un-empathetic, but if someone is planning on taking up meth, could they at least drop their kids off at the foster home, then go put a pistol to your head and end it? Please do it near the morgue so we don't have to carry you far. Why should society have to spend millions of dollars to clean up the healthcare/law enforcement/social services nightmare you are going to create? If you really value your life that little, at least man up and end it with some finality and perhaps a shred of dignity.
