Pure idiocy

It involves gasoline. And fire. And people with the minds of 2nd graders performing automotive engineering.

"Police say the three had removed the engine cowling between the two front seats of the van and used a water bottle to transfer gas from the bucket directly into the carburetor in order to keep the engine running."

What could possibly go wrong?

Sometimes you should not get credit for trying. This is one of them.

There were just so many "Don'ts" in that scenario it is incredible. Very sad and painful but three very stupid people. I hope they survive, maybe they'll file a lawsuit against the gas station that sold them the gas.

So you think the gas station is responsible? That is crazy.

Do you think asked permission to buy gas to dribble right into the carb and the gas station said yea, sure go ahead.

I wonder how they managed to get that thing down the street in Bellevue without getting arrested.

You get arrested there if you don't drive a sliver German car.

EDIT: oh, they were in Factoria.

Does that van even have a carb? And by removing a cowl you can reach it from within the cabin?

I went to college in Flint, at what used to be the General Motors Institute. I can assure you that there are plenty of people with the minds of 2nd graders working at the big 3 doing automotive engineering.

Sure. The engine in a full size van sits just to the right of the drivers feet. There is typically an engine cover of some kind that can be accessed from inside. If its an old van, then it could have a carbed engine

It is illegal to put gasoline in unapproved containers (another idiotic government regulation) but I wonder who is responsible for enforcement. I could see the station being responsible if an employee pumped the gas or saw it being done and didn't shut the pump off. But if it wasn't witnessed, could the station be held accountable?

It's not just automotive. When I worked in aerospace we had an engineer who was having trouble getting his car started. We told him he could pour some gas into the carb to quickly see if the problem was fuel or ignition related. He pour a WHOLE QUART of gasoline down a Toyota Corolla carburetor.

Guess I never knew! I think of carbs being phased out by 1980 or so, but I guess some vehicles still had them.

I bet I know what kind of bumper sticker they had on the back of the van ..... especially if they try to sue the gas station.
