Your thoughts on bying limited production domestic cars.

I've been thinking of buying a used Dodge Magnum. I like em and my pick up is ready to put out of its misery. I found out today that Dodge has discontinued production of the Magnum in favor of the Challenger and the 300.
Any thoughts on buying limited production models of the NON Exotic variety?
EDIT: Not limited production, how about DISCONTINUED MODELS?

Magnum was not a limited production, they made almost 200,000 of them over the years.
That's more than three times the number of 928s Porsche made. Ever. Total.

And the Magnum shared most of their components with other models, so parts availability is a non issue.

We drove a couple when they first came out and we were looking for a family wagon. They're good cars and seem to be pretty durable. The MPG is not great, however.

That ruled them out for us. Man, it sucks to think sensibly.

I like the Magnums too...especially the SRT-8. It's probably the only Chrysler product that has caught my eye in recent times, because it's so different. It seems like the American market had given up wagons in favor of crossovers/SUVs and it was nice to see a real American wagon again (not just a hatchback).

As already stated, they weren't limited production...I would guess the last generation Mercury Marauder was the last real limited American production model (not trim level/variant) with just over 11k made (not that many for a large American car manufacturer).

sorta; it had a different engine, dual exhaust, different interrior, bumpers, limited slip diff, etc. More than just trim level in other words...still, it was a disappointment and was discontinued.

It was a Grand Marquis and had a 4.6liter that only developed 302 hp. They weren't much, that's why no sales.

I've driven a magnum, can you say blind spots!

They are super common too, not something I would call limited production.

a little more than that...my point was that there weren't many made. If you want to split hairs about it, yes it has the body of it's Ford and Mercury cousins and probably shared a lot of minor parts, which is probably why it didn't sell well.

No, it didn't sell well because it was a MINO, Marauder in name only. I looked at them back then but they weren't very quick. They just had a look. They made about 11,000 of them, there should be one for sale someplace. Maybe Kaisen can find it.

I was considering buying a Magnum or a Volvo wagon to haul my paintings around in.

I think the Magnum's cool looking. Funny, now the Magnum's a brick and the newer Volvo wagons are svelte.

I asked around which one to buy and nearly everyone said, Are you kidding me? Buy a Volvo. I asked why and they said. 'Cause the Magnum's a Chrysler!

Anyway, I ended up with an '06 V70 R. 300hp and probably even worse mpg than a Magnum. I'm getting 16mpg, featherfooting it around town.

Seems better put together than the Magnum, though, and looks fine too.

Fords answer to the Imp. SS, but when Kenny Brown got ahold of one

If you get a Magnum SRT-8 you should be OK, I too have some time in Magnum RT, an AWD one too, and it was a fun ride and could tow a track car..

The LX (Magnum, Charger, 300) was developed by Mercedes Banz. Many Benz parts, including suspension components and transmission. Get one with the 5.7L Hemi (or 6.2L SRT8) and you'll have a fairly well-built vehicle from a mechanical perspective. The interior materials are a little subpar, but the cars are really affordable compared to the competiton.

Stay away from the smaller motors. Go Hemi or forget it.

Ask yourself this; "Is there any copies of Consumer Reports at any Chrysler / Jeep Dealerships"??

Like Eric said, the v6 Magnums are dull as dishwater. HEMI is the only way to go.

But Magnums are definitely rarer outside of the 'hood these days.

Personally, I'd much prefer a 2005-2009 Grand Cherokee SRT8. Less embarrassing in the better parts of town.
