On a modern dirtbike with a compression release, you kick the kickstart lever to bring the piston up towards top dead center, then thumb the release and slowly move the lever to get the piston just past top dead center. Then, release the compression release and kick it hard through bottom dead center. It should start with one kick. Easy peasy....

My friend had a big old Cat diesel dozer. Open relief valve, start 5hp gasoline "kicker" motor, engage clutch, start the flywheel turning, and then it would roar to life.

The old Deutz 2 cylinder diesel in our sailboat had pressure relief valves for hand crank starting.... that way you could "free" spin the motor over to 8-10 rpm and fire it off.
