Need Help-Sound Deadening Material:
I've reached another impasse in the 356 project. I need to replace the original sound pad material under the car/above transaxle and around the engine. Most of it was either missing or seriously deteriorated. I ordered a kit from a place that sells 356 resto parts but the pieces do not even resemble the factory material and they are pre-cut but do not fit the places where they need to go.
![]() At this point, I want to find some generic sound pad material and just cut it to fit but all I can find is Dynamat-type stuff that looks 100% wrong because it has writing all over it and has a cellophane finish, etc... Haven't had any luck yet in a web search, anyone have suggestions? It need to look like this: ![]() ![]() Thanks! ![]()

Why not use dynamat (or Eastwood's) and then spray it with Wurth or 3M rubberized undercoating?

Denis, I think you are going to have trouble trying to find sound deadening material that doesn't have writing & an aluminized finish. I bought some paint on/spray on (can't remember the brand) sound deadening stuff and put it on the inside of my car. It has some micro-balls in it that supposedly converts the sound energy to heat to dampen it. Something like that could be sprayed black & look similar. Unfortunately since I don't have the car finished, I can't comment on how well it works. Maybe somebody else will chime in. As for the POS kit you bought, you'd probably be better off cutting out the backing pieces from upholstery board or plastic sheet yourself and having them upholstered. Fun, Fun.

Can you purchase one of the engine sound pads for the 911 and then cut to shape/size? It looks like a smaller engine compartment.

McMaster Carr sells all sorts of sound deadening materials.

Bingo!
![]() That's exactly the type of answer I was looking for. Thank you so much. I just knew that there had to be some place that sells stuff like this in endless varieties and that was it. And BTW, that place has great phone support with a guy who sounds like he's actually in the U.S. on the other end. ![]() Here's the page: McMaster-Carr

I bought a ton of stuff from them to reduce the sound levels on the 914/6. It helped with road noise and some of the engine compartment noise. But when carbs are about 1 foot behind your head AND they are using K&N filters, it wasn't that helpful.
Oh and the dual port, low back pressure muffler wasn't helping either. The "Blond" used to set off car alarms in parking garages, all over San Diego...

None of them yet but plan on the urethane coated which is 1" thick, black and oil/water/dirt resistant.
