exactly..
owner needs training.. not the dog.. A....I understand what your saying.. BUT..this dog need more than a crate.. he should try taking the top of.. he needs some attention, more excercise... he's a dog..let him be one.. otherwise it's a rescue from death to solitary.. and that ain't much.. So how did the night go?
How close is the crate to your bed? I crate next to the bed, my dogs like the proximity.

My opinion is crap? To each their own I guess. You crate your dog when you are not home (~9 hours?) and crate the dog when you are in bed (~8 hours)? So the dog gets about 7 hours a day to stretch its legs? Wow. My dog is part of the family. Doesnt chew anything and doesnt mess in the house. Good dog? Yup. Good owner too.

I wouldn't say your opinion is crap, BK, but being crated at night might not be as cruel as you think. Ideally the dog becomes quite attached and comfortable in the crate, so it's not viewed as a penalty box, but rather as the place to spend the night. It affords the dog safety and security. At least that's the way it's been explained to me. You'd have to ask my dog what she thinks. Full disclosure: my dog sleeps on a doggie bed on the ground next to our bed. Looks a bit like Rika's dog above, but curled up into a little ball. She stays there all night without any fuss. Perhaps crate-trained dogs view their crates as my dog views her pillow.

I crate trained all of mine..
for a few weeks at most.. crate remained..but the top came of... the dog in ?..spends too much time there now.. he views it as a cell..not his want to be place IMO.. he's there when he awakes... out till everyone leaves.. not much time & alot of energy aboard.. back you go...hrs on end.. oh their home.. I'm out..get to pee and smell.. do # 2 now their sitting about & watching TV.. telling to go and lay somewhere.. until.. back I go.. Rika Last edited by Rikao4; 02-03-2011 at 11:04 AM.. |

My dog is in a kennel or a crate when not directly supervised. This crate is in high traffic areas of the house / porch and someone is home most the time. This is because it still is young, extremely high strung and will ingest and destroy items around the house and yard. It gets a minimum of 2 hours of exercise every day of which 30 minutes are training. It runs about 20-30 miles a week during hunting season. And it never barks inside of the kennel or crate. My dog likes going in his crate sometimes. They say it's because of the territorial nature of the dog.
If you put them in their crate and they know that's a boundary they relax because they don't have to stress guarding the entire house if they are out. In the crate they feel in control of their environment. with that said, I let my monster sleep next to me on the bed even tho he snores and farts occasionally. rjp
