Where?
Looks nice in the picture but for that cheap I have to imagine there are some problems/issues (like, a lot of them...)

Minnesota. I don't know the car or the dealer, but I'll bet Eric will chime in.

Do your homework. These 'exotics' can be expensive to maintain, and even more expensive to repair.
Excellence does a good job of hitting the high and low points and pointing out the best years to buy.

I did read an article in excellence about a guy that bought one for $4000 and ended up with a decent runner. The problem is that you just don't know what you're getting.

I'd love to get and 88.5 in manual. I've been told that the 88.5 model is less costly to maintain.. Any thoughts?

Burn the fire.

It's not specifically the engine you have to worry about on these... It's all the electronic doodads in the cab. Troubleshooting the HVAC system on a late 80's unit will make you want to murder puppies. No joke.

This is an 81 not an 88. Pretty sure that's "only" the 16V version. Supposedly the 32V versions are twice the car...

Having just recently shopped for (and purchased) just such an "exotic" I can tell you that you should have similar expectations for a four-figure 928 as you would with a four-figure 911. Be prepared to spend lots 'o bucks to fix.
I drove an $8500 S4 5-speed. It was a running project car. Drove decent, sounded like a muscle car with a rear-muffler bypass installed. Needed lots and lots of TLC to bring it up to my idea of par, both mechanically and cosmetically.

Is someone offering $3999 to take it away? Cause I would run and not walk from that car. The picture of the right interior shows a panel off the center console with a bunch of wires hanging out.....OUUUUUU

Depending on what year but about 7 total ...
![]() $3,999 for a real head ache? Sorry not for me. I've have enough issues with my 78 911. If you could find a good one at $8,000 you'd be much better off for sure. Or an early water cooled 911 or Boxter but as we all know these have some "issues" was well. ![]() The air cooled cars are the best short term or long term "investment". (if you could call any car an investment) They are DIYable and you'll see most of your money back when you sell.

Maybe per seat.
A 928 is going to have a ton more electrical motors than 7. A 914 is about as simple as a car can get, and it has almost that many. (Headlight lifters x 2, fuel pump, windshield wiper motor, interior fan motor - that's 5 right there). $4K for an average 1981 928 isn't abnormally low. Prices for the '87 S4 are of course higher, but the early 80s 928s aren't very sought after and go cheap. |
