As a kid growing up in Hawaii, a tsunami or as they were called back then, a tidal wave, was something I always wondered about. They taught us in school about the "tidal wave" that his Hilo in the 40s and again in the 50s. I had watched some really big waves on Sandy Beach and they all petered out and no one could explain to me how what made the tidal wave so much more powerful.

When you finally have it shown with modern TV graphics that several square miles of ocean are suddenly forced up 10 or more feet because of the earthquake and all the forse it would take to lift several square miles of water has to go somewhere, it becomes clear.

There really is no stopping that much power. It is a risk people pay to live right on the beach, or within a very close distance of the ocean. Especially along the rig of fire.

Watching videos of the Japan Tsunami in 2011 gives you appeciation of the power behind all this water. Whole towns/buildings/cars/people were just swept away as others watched helplessly from rooftops hoping that they weren't next.

These areas of the planet seem to be so susceptible to tsunamis and the fact that there isn’t a warning system in place is absurd.

I saw one report that the sensors for the tsunami warning system were not operational and had been that way for 6 years. The government knows it cost a lot of money to maintain the system. Very typical government incompetence. That money was likely used to add to a government officials bank account or some other corrupt manner. Governments around the world are much the same, enrich the officials, and then lets the infrastructure fall apart. Now they will have a clean start.

The density of saltwater is a little greater than 1000kg/cubic meter. Get a bunch of that moving along and not much stands a real chance.
