This thread isn't at all what I expected from the title.

Jim,

Do you know why they got the nick name "Jug"? It wasn't based on "Juggernaut" I have always liked them too!

The P-47 M was really the best of the bunch with ~480 MPH speed at 25K. One of the fastest propeller driven aircraft of the war. The fastest allied production bird. 8 fifties, recoilless rifles, HVAR rockets and bombs.

One bird that could deliver a punch and take it too!

It got the name "Jug" from a milk Jug. Looks like one standing on its nose.

If I were to fly one Allied aircraft during WW2 it would have been a Thunderbolt...it could take a licking and keep on ticking to get me home.

One should read his book "Thunderbolt"..his mission of June 26, 1943 is of special interest..as it shows just how much punishment a Thunderbolt could take and still bring its pilot home.

That pig was happiest when it was going straight down! It's just like a Piper Arrow IV- you pull the power back, and it develops a LUST for the ground! It won't glide at all, and you had BETTER turn toward the runway right now if the motor quits!

The P-47 was the same way. Pilots in WWII used to use the supercharger to go to FL330 or something similar; when they saw Focke-Wuif or Messerschmidt designs rise against bomber formations, they dove and attacked....very effectively. Since they could close on the FW or M German fighters at over 500 mph, their attacks were effective. German fighters in 1944 or or 1945 were typically flown by teen-aged boys, who had little training, and half the time destroyed the airplane upon landing. American pilots were highly experienced, so the battle was usually over before it even started-

Birds of a feather... both Thunderbolts are known for their durability after taking lead.
