Are Totos still Da Man for a Good Flush?

I am planning a bathroom gut & reno. A contractor will be doing the work since it is not a job I can drag out for 6 months. Tiled shower enclosure, drop in tub, new vanity, new crapper, new tile. Yeah, the usual: How to spend $20K in 70 sq ft . . .

Are Totos still the best one flusher?

The sales dude tried to convince me that the Toto secret was a 3" tank outlet & the competition had clued in. We have dismal city water pressure as well.

Ian

I take the honeybucket and toss it out the window, seeing it's a 3rd world age.

There was a dual purpose for the man walking on the outside, and cause for upheaval over walking-path(ala Shakespeare).

Toto is still king in my opinion. I haven't had one complain yet in the 20 years since we started to install them. 16-20K is about normal.

We have three Totos in the house, we just got the third one a "self cleaning" for the entry bathroom. All three are different Toto models and all three work great.

Thanks guys, I appreciate it. Any preferences for the gallons/flush?

Ian

I would get the one piece design and I don't know if there is a choice on gallons/liter per flush

Dean: Yeah, I am thinking one-piece & normal bowl.

Overall, I was stunned by the cost of bathroom hardware. Shower head & taps for $1500 with cheap ones at $600. WTF? We are just under an estimated $10K for vanity, shower, tub, tile etc. We will get some quotes on labor in the next weeks. I am still trying to decide whether the bathroom is worth the cost of a decent older 911 . . .

Was reading a toilet test/review in a home improvement mag a few months ago. The top rated toilet for flushing was actually Home Depots house brand, Glacier Bay.

Ian, I recently did a bathroom for a customer. The soap dishes for the shower were almost $300

We've replaced a couple of the toilets in the house over the years. What I've determined is that you want a large outlet, and you want an outlet that has glazing (makes it smooth). Also, to keep things relatively clean, get a toilet with a large water surface area. When you go to HD, they have that spec for most of the toilets. We've had some $100 and 150 toilets, and now our toilets are closer to $300. The $300 toilets so far seem universally better than the cheap ones.

Is that really something to boast about? I really don't know, just asking . . .

Thanks for the feedback everyone. Currently we an an American Standard piece of crap ( ) in that bathroom. It is a 2 flusher. A Gerber in the downstairs bathroom (mine) works well - if you hold the handle down during the flush process. We have had crappers for 100 + years (much longer if you add in the water trough varieties), and you would think that they ALL would work well but that is obviously not the case. The enviro pigs have stunted us. But I live next to a Great Lake so water usage be damned.

Ian

The Toto toilets I have used in Japan were great...though the warm water shot up the butt was unexpected and not appreciated...

Toto toilets in Japan have gizmos...when you sit it turns on and waits for a command. There is a control panel on your right...never figured it out...just learned to not touch the control panel. LOL.

Today's low flush (less than a gallon per flush) toilets are terrible. You have to flush twice which negates the water savings.

The Japanese have the best toilets: Automatic heated seats, dual flush modes for #1 and #2, and bide(sp) ala the french influence.

They also have the worst toilets: Hole in the ground to balance over on crackly knees, holding clothing up to keep it out of the stream whilst dragging dress pants in the mire.

Custom kitchens and baths has been 40-50% of our business for 20 years. Just a few years back, I had the joy of install one of those Toto seat warmer butt shooter seats for a Chinese lady married to a Japanese man in their Master bath. This one was remote control (a pad on the wall). Not the cheapo mounted to the side I wanted to try the warm butt washer when we got done with thejob to see what the fuss was about. I wanted to be the first to use it, but decided to not do it. It would not be the right thing to do and I just might like it too much. Who knows? I still don't know how it cleans one's rear after you take a dump. The French came up with the idea, right? I think I like my cheap Costo toilet paper better.

We have two Toto's in our home and they are ok but my kids still find ways to plug 'em.

I will say that they flush with authority and even with the the occasional plug, they are still miles better than the others I have seen.

FWIW, you can only buyt low volume (1.6 gallon/flush) toilets in the USA. higher volume ones are no longer made. It the law dude!
