Pickup or no pickup, that is the question

No, not that pickup Wolfe....

I'm going to meet a guy in a couple hours to see an F-150. Last year, I got rid of my truck. Claimed I was turning over a new leaf, and I was going to simply rent a truck if I need it. Yeah, well I HATE not having a truck. Drives me freaking nuts. Need some 4x8 sheet rock? Yeah, instead of an hour trip to the lumber yard, that just turned into a 3 hour ordeal that involves a crap load of extra driving and $$$ to rent a truck.

I considered getting a trailer and putting a hitch on my wifes SUV, but our driveway is a twisty deal that comes off a busy arterial street. I really don't want to try backing a trailer in or out.

Unless someone has some brilliant idea, I'm going to buy another truck. No, I am not putting a roof rack on my 997.

btw, if you care, 2000 F-150 4x4 supercab, 77k, 5.4 V8, good condition, $5800.

HardDrive 02-14-2011 01:43 PM

And yes, I have clearly already made my choice, I'm just looking for affirmation :D

Racerbvd 02-14-2011 01:44 PM

It is a very useful tool, buy it...

Porsche-O-Phile 02-14-2011 01:45 PM

Just the thing with gas going to $5 a gallon soon - good show!

;)

Whatever thrills ya... I've had one in my past and wouldn't get another one, but that's just me. Enjoy!

red-beard 02-14-2011 01:48 PM

How well will it run on E15?

GH85Carrera 02-14-2011 01:50 PM

That is why I have an El Camino. I can't imagine life without a pickup bed. I never get into heavy hauling, but I have too many projects that require a pickup.

tabs 02-14-2011 01:50 PM

Don't listen to the negative one....BUY the truck...at $5800 if worse came to worse you could leave it by the side of the road with the keys in it..and not be out very much in the scheme of things. However one presumes that it is not going to get a lot of miles put on it, as such as U have found out a truck can be very usefull at times.

sammyg2 02-14-2011 02:13 PM

When I was 17 I bought my first pick-up, then I sold it and bought a 914. then I got another pick up, and then sold it and got another car. This went back and forth several times until I finally admitted I needed to have a pick-up to be happy.
I've had one ever since and even though I rarely haul anything in it, I still just like having and driving a pick up truck.
I say go for it.

widgeon13 02-14-2011 02:35 PM

Can't survive in the country w/o a pick-up. I say "go for it".

RWebb 02-14-2011 02:37 PM

buy a truck ---> that ensures that you will do more work

motion 02-14-2011 02:38 PM

Why such a big gashog for limited use? Why 4x4? Maybe consider a smaller truck with a 4 cylinder.

MotoSook 02-14-2011 02:49 PM

+1

Or buy a beater for $1500 and spend the difference on gas.

But one this is certain---- a man needs a pickup! :)

chrenan 02-14-2011 02:52 PM

Preach on brother. I always have a truck, current is a 2002 F150 4x4 with the 4.6 V8, stick shift. Around here used F150's litter the streets, you can pick and choose and get exactly what you want, its nuts to buy new.

Hendog 02-14-2011 03:00 PM

Yep, buy the truck!

I had the little Mazda B2200 with carbs; it was a thirsty little truck! It was good for getting my wife to her part time job, hauling the dogs around, and getting yard waste to the landfill. But then we couldn't drive anywhere in the summer wit it, and I'm not about to load up two black labs and a parrot in the Accord, so I picked up (no pun intended) a F150 4X4 5.4 Triton. Thirsty too, but it's not really an issue since we only put on approx 7-8K Km year. I really like driving it the few times I do. I figure I'll always have a truck as long as we have a house and a "zoo".

A930Rocket 02-14-2011 03:04 PM

I love my 2001 F150 SuperCrew Lariat with a 5.4, but the MPG sucks. I'm getting 12 in the city and 15-16 on the hwy, but it does have 188,000 miles on it. Maybe it's getting tired?

EDIT: I''ve had a pickup truck of one kind or another for 20 years. My wife wouldn't know what to do if I didn't have one.

rnln 02-14-2011 03:12 PM

I say depend on what type of person you are. Always find something to do at home, or siting at the TV or computer when at home?
For me, I had same situation, same thoughts, same decision last year. Now, I got a ranger. I use it a lot more than I thought I would.

peppy 02-14-2011 03:13 PM

I used to have unlimited access to my wife's F150, but I backed it into something last monday and she cut me off.

Buy the truck.

madmmac 02-14-2011 03:28 PM

Had trucks in the past.

Switched over to SUV's and a 6x10 utility trailer and never looked back......except when backing up the trailer.

Dan J 02-14-2011 03:42 PM

I've had a Pick up for at least the last 30 years. Currently have a 07 Chevy 2500 with a diesel it's the best one yet. They're big and dumb and use too much gas
but they sure are handy I say buy it

sammyg2 02-14-2011 03:54 PM

My current pickemup, a 2010 F-150 gets 17 mpg combined with the 5.4 engine.
I used to have a datsun pickemup that got 21 mpg, and a nissan that got 22.

Unless the current smaller sized trucks are less thirsty than they used to be, the mileage really isn't an issue with the big truck small truck thing IMO.

HardDrive 02-14-2011 04:52 PM

Done deal. Meeting the guy tomorrow to make the buy. Trucks in good shape. A few dings and scrapes, but overall very nice. Drives great. Its an XL, but thats fine. I like rubber floors.

Mileage? I drive a Carrera S everyday. On a good day it gets 14mpg. With me driving its more like 12-13. I'd probably be 'going green' if I drove the truck more.

Zeke 02-14-2011 05:05 PM

I have never not owned a PU since I took apart my first project car in 1968.

VINMAN 02-14-2011 05:09 PM

I couldnt live without one. Ive always had some type of truck, in the past 30 yrs ive been driving. whether it was a P/U or one of my ford broncos.

Tim Hancock 02-14-2011 05:28 PM

I have had a truck of some sort since I started racing MX in the 80's. Presently have a used Tundra 4x4. It should last me many more years of occasional use when I need to haul or tow something and for the few days a year when severe snow drifting happens out in the wide open boonies I live in. My wife and I never have and never will own a SUV/station wagon/minivan. Trucks are made to haul stuff easily.... cars/motorcycles are made to drive daily.... pretty simple.

flatbutt 02-14-2011 05:49 PM

yeah HD, ya gots to have a truck. I f I was a workin' man I'd have the F 150 but the Taco is all I need.

Arizona 911 02-14-2011 05:53 PM

I have a 1972 chevy truck with a straight 6 and a 1 barrel carb and a 4 spd. It only gets 10 miles per gallon and I think last year I put 100 miles total on it, but it was there when I needed it. I used it yank 2 oleanders from my yard, hauled 4 loads of rock, and Home Depot runs. If my wife sees something she wants at a garage sale, she knows the truck is there ready to go. I carry just liabilty ins.@ $22.00 per month and the tags are $25.00 per year. It's still cheaper than if I would have rented a truck and the inconvenience to me just isn't worth it. BUY THE TRUCK.

kaisen 02-14-2011 05:59 PM

Just make a tune-up part of the negotiated deal. At his expense. Through a Ford dealer.

If they can change the spark plugs without ruining the engine, you're good for another 100K miles.

I'm serious

red-beard 02-14-2011 06:02 PM

Obama put a gun to my head and said I had to buy an F250. I love the thing!

Thanks Obama!

David 02-14-2011 06:44 PM

I hate driving my truck. Maybe not hate it, but I really don't like it. It's my second truck and trucks have been daily driver for about 10 years now, but I've finally had enough. So I thought about buying a Cayenne so I could pull a trailer but still have a fun "car". After several months of thinking about it, I realized I couldn't live without a truck. So I added some width to my driveway so I could park the truck off to the side and get another car in the garage. Needless to say I've been looking for just the right 997 for a couple months now.

So buy the truck but don't give up the daily driver sports car like I did 10 years ago.

Evans, Marv 02-14-2011 09:28 PM

I bought my F350, 7.3L diesel in '05 because I knew I would soon need something to haul & tow stuff. Now I only use it a couple of times a week, but I don't plan on getting rid of it. It's there when I need it. However oddly enough my favorite hauler/tower was my old E150 wagon. I actually feel like I could get more in that, volume wise, than my truck.

EarlyPorsche 02-14-2011 09:53 PM

Jeep Comanche. Enough said.

RWebb 02-14-2011 09:58 PM

Byron,
How'd you fit in that thing? You look bigger then me and I can't fit or I'd have one

cbush 02-15-2011 05:06 AM

Finally got a truck last year and love it! Never going back! It is not a daily driver so gas mileage is not an issue.

Go for it!

MotoSook 02-15-2011 05:12 AM

I couldn't live with just my F250. I couldn't drive it everyday to work. I'm glad I have the comfy BMW...heck even the 911 is more comfortable for the commute. Maybe you should start putting more miles on the 930 until the 997 is found :)

I'm serious

THIS!! Plugs on the early 5.4's like to let go soon after you change them if they're not done right. $300 for a spark plug change!

A930Rocket 02-15-2011 09:43 AM

With 188,000 miles on my 2001 5.4, I've changed the spark plugs 3 times with no problem. First time was at 100,000, 2nd was at about 150,000 and third was about 175,000. The car has a slight misfire I can feel at idle that I've been chasing. New plugs, COPS, ICV, fuel fitler, air filter, cleaning the MAP sensor, etc. hasn't fixed it yet. Might be part of the poor mpg or the high mileage?

Install them dry at 25 ft/lbs is the word on the F150 forums.

If you need COPS, check ebay. You can get them for $100 for all 8.

HardDrive 02-15-2011 09:56 AM

What the problem with the plugs? What is 'not doing them right'?

I've changed every plug, on every vehicle I've ever owned the same way. Finger tighten them down, then 1/8 turn with a wrench. Hasn't failed me yet.

Burnin' oil 02-15-2011 10:01 AM

I think the problem with the plugs is the occasional stripped thread - soft metal and not much thread depth, or something like that.

By the way, great idea buying the truck. And not just any truck, but THAT truck. You made the right call - a good decision - well done. You did everything right, no doubt. No regrets on this one. Super job. etc.
