My Dog Ate Some Red Seeds in Backyard- Help!

I have a seven month old puppy who has been eating these tiny red seeds in the backyard for the past couple of days- see photos below.

I didn't really think anything of it, but did a Google search a little while ago and discovered that some tree seeds can be poisonous to dogs.

I couldn't find an image online of anything that looked like this, so I'm asking for some help here if anyone knows what it might be. I have a lot of oak trees in the yard and found that oak acorns are dangerous for pets.

My dog is not acting any different, but my vet said it could take a few days to show any symptoms if it was poisonous and I should find out what it is and get back to her.

Thanks in advance!

Mike

Jim- thanks for the quick reply! I don't recall seeing a tree like that in the backyard, but I appreciate the photo.

If your pup ate it for 2 days (that's starting to eat it 48 hours ago), it should be fine. The first batch will have long made it through its system. I'd just watch the dog and if it starts acting lethargic, gets seizures or any funny business like that, I'd go to the vet.

And while you watch the dog, go take it on a trip or two to the pet store, get a crate and an outside kennel run and make sure the dog is in the kennel or crate when not supervised.

That's what I was thinking/hoping. He's definitely not acting lethargic in any way- lots of energy.

He's an inside dog. The weather has just been really nice here over the weekend and I let him stay out in the yard while I was reading on the back porch.

Other than a lot of oak trees, nothing else. It does sort of look like a raisin, but hard as a rock. I have no idea why he would want to eat them, other than that's just what puppies do.

my dogs used to eat the windfall apples, but well after they had rotted. it was mainly the male newfoundland. it would give him terrible diarrhea. it also got him drunk. the little twit.

i hope your dog is ok.

Our daschund eats the little Bradford pears all the time. She loves them when they are just ripe, but she eats them when they are rotten or dried up.

Hi Rob,

Thanks for checking for me. He's doing fine, so I'm hoping it was just a false alarm.

Just wanted to let you guys know that I contacted the Tarrant Extension Agent with Texas A&M University and they told me the red seeds are actually insect galls that commonly attach themselves to the leaves on oak trees. They're completely harmless to pets- what a relief.

Thanks again!

Good news!

My dog ate the 2X4 railing off the back porch... her taste improved... the neighbors tree started dropping avocado... I started finding pits in the yard. Couldn't figure out what was happening... then I found a half eaten avocado with doggie teeth prints.
