Roku - 10K movies on demand... what's the catch.

The way I understand this is that I pay $100 for the box and sign up for Netflix at $10/month. Then I have instant access to 10K movies. Is there a reason to not do this?

It's legit, Netflix specifically shows it as their online player.

Netflix and MSFT just announced a deal yesterday as well; xBox owners who subscribe can download movies and "Gold" members can even share Netflix movies amongst themselves.

Sounds cool.

Yesterday Microsoft announced that you soon will be able to use your XBOX360 for this service without buying the Roku box.

YEAH! I love my Xbox 360 and this new service was always envisioned in the production of the boxes as well as the Sony PS3.

Sony especially had the specific hope of becoming a multimedia console more than just a 'game console.'

You could stream Netflix movies onto your PC. Not all of them, but I think the same 10k that they are talking about could be streamed to the PC if you have a Netflix account. Just plug the PC to the TV and there you have it.

You probably found out by now (2.5 years later).

Roku supposedly connects directly to the router or cable modem - no computer required.

As opposed to connecting a Mac to receive Netflix. Mac must be Intel-based. PowerPC-chipped Macs aren't covered.

I just bought a Roku via Amazon. Have not received yet. Will add some comments after I use for awhile.

Since introduction in '08, there must be a few 100 thousand users. One or more may contribute a post.

You can access everything on Netflix from your Nintendo Wii.

Without HD...

I have Wii, PS3, and Xbox.

Netflix looks best on Xbox. The Ps3 is a little washed out.. the Wii is standard def only. Last I read, they had no plans to update it.

Last I heard, Netflix is dropping it's mail cd-distribution altogether.
Suscribers are not happy.

I think there are some MAJOR privacy issues involved with personal enjoyment of media being paid for, controlled, accessable in the same format and quality.....and publically routed...soley through the internet.

That is all.

Each one of those is a can of worms.

I have Roku and Netflix. Not all of Netflix's library is available for streaming in fact just by the looks of it most of the newer stuff is still only available via dvd mailed to you. It's worth it for me, I use Pandora a lot to listen to music and Netflix streaming more for catching up on TV stuff I never watch like Dexter. I'm assuming Netflix is moving their distribution to streaming over time and their on line library will grow while they slowly phase out dvd by mail.
