Scratched DVD

I have a relatively new DVD and there is a scratch making part of the DVD not work properly.

Does anyone have a suggestion for a repair product that really works?

Some movie rental places (do they have those anymore?) have a machine that buffs out scratches on their rentals, and they will do it for you for a small fee, like $3.

Generally radial scratches are OK. If you have tracking errors you will have to polish it out. It does not need to be completely removed. Try using a car wax with a polishing agent. Polish in a radial direction only. Circular motions may induce more tracking errors. If it is deep scratch get a disk doctor (~$20). I’ve used this with a lot of success on some pretty ugly DVD’s and CD’s.

It's a pretty deep scratch. It is radial. One of the episodes will only play about 10% before getting errors.

I’ll correct my original post.

tooth paste works well as a very mild buffing agent, serious, plus then your disk is left minty fresh.

Got a GameStop in the area?

They do a huge business in used games.

They polish scratches all the time.

Try them.

If the scratch does not penetrate the plastic down to the media you should be able to save it.

Public libraries usually have disc doctors. They might let you use theirs for free, as opposed to game stop which usually charges a couple of dollars.

Also, I don't know why it works, but I can sometimes read dvds in my computer when they won't play on a dvd player. Maybe you can copy the whole disc and then watch it on the tv.
