The truth is stranger than fiction thread

So,

I'm reading one of our daily newspapers online today and find this

"A CHINESE man sought treatment for headaches for four years, only to discover he had had a 10cm dagger lodged in his head."

Chinese man lives four years with knife stuck in head | Herald Sun

What else is out there in the news that shows truth is indeed stranger than fiction?

That is so bizarre - you must follow the links to the Sky news and the video of the xray and the blade. Insane!

Bizarre indeed

How on earth did this poor man go so long without someone in the medical profession sending him off for x-rays before now???

Not many swallowing/speech/headache...problems can be diagnosed by a straight forward x-ray of a fella's grape. Fortunately for this guy, it works great for finding a giant knife stuck in your head!!

I suppose that depending on where he was seen in China, a simple x-ray could be cutting edge stuff...however, chiropracters "see" all sorts of stuff on obligatory preliminary x-rays. As already mentioned, an MRI would have been a disaster.

I remember a guy from Gallup NM who was about to get an MRI for his knee. I was working at the VA in Albuquerque, had just got done fishing a pretty big thorn of some sort out of his foot, asked him if he had any metal in him, he says no, I ask him if he was ever shot, he says oh yeah, I have a bullet in my head. .32 he picked up in a bar fight in Truth or Consequences, of all places, removal worse than leaving it there.

Sure enough, looked at his films and there it was, cancelled his MRI.

In BFE China, you might need to travel some to get medical care, maybe even farther for good medical care, it is a big country.

Is lead, being non-ferrous, affected in a MRI machine? ie, would it be pulled around by the strong magnetic field like steel, or does it just cock up the image?

Well, at normal levels lead is not magnetic, but with enough of a mag field, almost anything can be affected. I'm not sure that an MRI is strong enough to affect lead. I did see a video of a frog being levitated by a magnetic field. It was a REALLY strong mag field.

You think that is weird?

I have seen people walking around with metal objects embedded in their navels, ears, nose, lips, cheeks, eyebrows and their tongues!

Apparently they pay someone to do this to them!

Sad (but not all that uncommon) story from my youth.

There was a beautiful little girl who lived down the street from me when I was a kid. Around 12 -or 13 (probably when puberty sets in) she so sadly died of a brain anyeurism(sp?) Upon autopsy we were told that it was her "twin" that had started to grow like a tumor. Apparently her mother had been pregnant with identical twins but due to a birth defect only one child formed normally. I remember her name was Shelley. She had a wonderful heart. RIP.

Hehe...and a whole lot of other bodily places besides...I can't fathom how some of these 'locations' could possibly be comfortable!
